Robitussin

My 22 year old son drinks 2 bottles of robitussin at a time.  I'm afraid he is going to die. He's been doing this approximately 2ce a week for 3 years. We have had him to therapists,psycologists and psychiatrysts, rehab and jail 6 times. Before this started he was an honor student in high school and went to 1 and 1/2 years at a prestigious engineering college. Is there anything else I can do to help him?

Benylin is the brand name here.

I used/abused this to get to sleep when I was drinking, this is a common practice among alcoholics and can lead to brain damage & death.

I'm sure you have something similar in the UK. Robitussin is just a brand name but many of those disgusting, syrupy cough syrups are more or less the same stuff.

Either way, very dangerous to abuse.

Cough syrup.  You can buy it without a prescription and the main ingrediant, dextromethorphan (DXM) can be abused as a psychadellic drug. It's very dangerous to abuse.

Hubby and I have not heard of robitussin, curious, please can you tell us what it is? Thanks.

This is known as Robotripping and there is a MAJOR risk of him causing brain damage by doing this. Especially if he's doing it this often.

Short of having him committed I don't know what else you can do but it's clear he's presenting a major threat to himself. This is extremely dangerous, extremely destructive behavior (as I'm sure you already know). Honestly whatever you can do to just, in the short term, get him to stop. Even if that means having him committed... I don't know what to do really.

He needs therapy obviously and you've tried that. But short-term you need to get this behavior under control or he will wind up killing himself.
