My sister is in denial

HI....my name is starr and i live in the SANTA CRUZ MOUNTAINS, Northern California. My sister is a severe alcholic, and has suffered from atleast 2 seziures believed to be related to her drinking! She is now 31 years old living with my father who has been in recovery for over 20 years. Now I believe that she is now menatlly ill and have even recorded her with my cam corder when she was highly intoxicated. There is no way that she will get help on her own, for one, she is unable to make decisions for herself anymore and is in denial of her problem. I told my dad to give her the option of rehab and if she denied that then she could no longer live in his home. So of course, she refused rehab and decided to live in her car???? I am curious to what legal rights familes have over victims of abuse? How can we get her committed???? She is dying before our eyes!!! I believe that because she has been heavily drinking for the past 16 years, tequila....it has done some serious damage to her liver and other organs...

hi. if your sister is in a condition in which she could endanger herself or others, you may want to consider having her involuntarily committed for an evaluation. it may separate her from the booze long enough to confront her reality. this is a drastic measure, but nothing is too drastic to save a life. she may be angry and resent this action, but it may be her only chance to survive. i had to be sent to a state psychiatric hospital against my will more than once, and was angry at first. but i came to realize i really needed outside help and today i know the reason why my family took that step was because they loved me and refused to watch me continue to slowly kill myself. my prayers are with you and i hope you can get her help. i also highly recommend al-anon for yourself. alcoholism sickens both the alcoholic and those who are close to them. best wishes--gm

Have you mananged to catch her at a time she's sober and show her the tapes you took of her intoxicated?  Otherwise I'm afraid there isn't much you can do besides look for support groups like Al-Anon
