I agree that AA would be a good place to start. Just check out a meeting, you don't have to say anything your first time or even stay for the whole thing. But check it out, see what it's like, and keep that option open for you.
You've been drinking a good amount but, as tab said, how much the withdrawl will effect you really depends on how much you've been drinking, how much damage you've done to your body, and how long you've been abusing alcohol. There's no set withdrawl. Everyone will have a different experience.
However, MOST people will have some type of withdrawl that includes some anxiety, sweating, shaking, insomnia, and things like that. Like a cold or a mild flu that will last for a few days, maybe a week. More serious alcoholics can have very dangerous withdrawl symptoms including hallucinations and seizures. And yes, it can be fatal. As you might expect, that's in the most dire of situations and the most extreme cases. You probably can tell if you fall into that category or not but either way I highly reccomend you check with your doctor before trying to detox yourself. Cold turkey is not for everyone.
To tell you my own experience, I was an almost daily drinker for about 6 years (vodka mostly). I DID quit cold turkey and the first week or so was the worst. Mostly I worked myself up into a frenzy about the withdrawl symptoms I MIGHT have (the seizures, hallucinations, etc) but those never came. I was anxious for a while, a little shakey, and definitely irritable. If you've ever tried to quit smoking it's very much the same. Hard to say if I had any sleeping troubles because I've ALWAYS had sleeping troubles. After about a week things got better. I still get some off-balance feelings and my memory is not what it used to be, but for the most part I feel relatively normal again.
There are plenty of support groups and systems out there for you (like this forum). Please don't hesitate to come here when you need a hand with it all!
Good luck, keep us informed.
Hi Patricia,
Welcome to this forum and your interest in it. I agree that AA is an excellent option for you to pursue.
Try to stop cold turkey and see what happens. The degree of withdrawl symtoms varies with the individual. It alos depends on the quantity you drink each day as well as the length of time that you have ben drinking daily.
You may get sick for aweek or so but the pain will be worth the gain.
