Tart cherries contain alcohol???

Hi everyone - I am a recovering alcoholic 5 years and have been taking tart cherry supplements for a few days because it is part of a "back to health" regimen I am on after getting off prozac. I just read though that cherries/tart cherry extract contain something called perillyl alcohol and I am now concerned about it...anyone know anything about this?

Perillyl alcohol is a natural occuring substance called a monoterpene.  It has no affect on you in the instance of "drunkeness".  Perillyl alcohol is derived from essential oils such as cherry, peppermint, sage, lavender and lemon grass. It has been used by cancer centers in holistic cancer treatment studies for pancreatic, stomach and colon cancer treatments.  It's efficacy has not been proven.  You do not need to worry about it in relation to your alcoholism.
