Sober is about not having any intake of alcohol in your system not about where you do not have alcohol. You have been sober and your wife should be proud of you obviously she needs to find out the truth for herself some how
You bet your booties it counts! Every day without a drink counts! Tell your wife she is WRONG!

if u google Guy in the Glass poem u'll see that Dale Wimbrow wrote this and the gal was a sub for guy...but oh so true!
When you get what you want in your struggle for self
And the world makes you queen for a day,
Just go to a mirror and look at yourself,
And see what that woman has to say.
For it isn't your boyfriend or family or friend
Whose judgement upon you must pass;
The woman whose verdict counts most in the end.
Is the one staring back from the glass.
Some people may think you a straight-shootin' chum
And call you a person of place.
But the woman in the glass says you're only a bum.
If you can't look her straight in the face.
She's the woman to please, never mind all the rest.
For she's with you clear up to the end
And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test.
If the woman in the glass is your friend.
You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years.
And get pats on the back as you pass,
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears.
If you've cheated the woman in the glass!

I guess what your wife is getting at is that some people believe that to be sober means not just being without a drink but also changing our old ways, changing our lives for the better, remember step one, we are powerless over drink our lives have become unmanageable. If you are in prison then it is they who are managing your life not you.
however
The definition of Sober to me is not having a drink. It is about living without a drink one day at a time. Working the program of recovery. When people ask me how long am I sober I say just today. I don’t think in terms of weeks months or years, we are sober today and that is what counts.
So I would suggest that you concentrate on staying sober and not worry about what others say. It is one day at a time.
good luck and cherish your sobriety every day.
