I presume we are talking about someone on Alcohol detox here....

Thiamine deficiency in chronic Alcoholism is associated with brain & liver damage so drinking would be very irresponsible.

Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (wet brain) is one of the problems associated with Thiamine deficiency so it is not just because he is being treated for this deficiency that he should not drink, he should not drink period.....

Thiamine is a B Vitamin. People who drink heavily tend to be very low on thiamine because the liver is working to process the alcohol in your system as opposed to processing other things (B vitamins for example).

Severe Thiamine deficiency can have a whole slew of problems and for the reason above a lot of alcoholics can progress to the point where they need to start taking Thiamine intravenously. It's a serious state that is usually treatable but very dangerous if not taken care of.

I don't know that it'd be "dangerous" to drink while taking Thiamine. I'm not a doctor. I suspect it's not really dangerous but I wouldn't know. It seems more likely that taking thiamine while continuing to drink would be counterproductive because you wouldn't be getting nearly the benefit of the thiamine if you were still drinking because of the above reasons.

Many alcoholics will be deficient in a number of vitamins and will take supplements and change their eating habits as part of their recovery. Heavy drinking and alcoholism takes its toll on the body in many many ways. Malnutrition and vitamin deficiencies are very common among alcoholics. Usually we're not all that healthy :-)

If your bf is in detox then I suspect he has doctors monitoring his health and they may reccomend a course of treatment that might include some vitamin supplements like Thiamine.
