twitching

I'd appreciate any input here:  I've had a "red wine habit" (about 2-3 glasses each night) for a couple of years now.  A few weeks ago I developed a lower eyelid twitch throughout the day.  I got a cold so I stopped the wine (was using cold meds) & the twitch went away.  I got better so I started drinking wine again & the twitch comes back (even worse!) each time I drink the wine.  I really don't want to stop the wine--it seems to be helping to keep my weigh under control. Any comments re: dependency or health issues I should be concerned about?  Thank you very much!

hello. that's an interesting problem. from your post it sounds like one is causing the other, however, what you are describing could also come from medications (some will cause involuntary movements as a side effect---this can range from an occasional inconvenience to a permanent condition known as tardive dyskenesia). alcohol itself sedates the central nervous system, so there could be some connection. a medical evaluation may reveal the cause. as far as dependence issues, 2-3 glasses of wine (and this assumes a typical alcohol content of 12% for red wine in a standard 5oz. glass) you are probably not at risk, especially if you have no other ill effects such as hangovers the next day. 1-3 drinks a day within these parameters is actually shown to have health benefits. hope this helps----gm

Candy, I'm just wondering...are you female?  I too have an "affinity" for red wine (at least a bottle every other day, sometimes several days in a row), and I've noticed occasional pains in my breast.   (Has anyone else heard of this??)  I did some research online, and there seems to be a link between the tanins in red wine and breast pains.  It's just a sharp pain on the side, like there's a needle & thread through it that someone is tugging on.

Sometimes I get the eye twitch thing, but not that often.  I never thought about the correlation until you posted this thread, so I'll try to be mindful of that if it happens again.

Hello there,

earlier this year I experienced a severe twitch under my right eye, which persistently lasted about 2 weeks and from then on only at random, finally subsiding. Last week a friend came over and we drank a bottle of red wine and she couldn't help noticing my eye twitching. I said I had no idea why. Two nights ago we went for dinner and - over a bottle of wine - my eye started again. On the occasion I thought it was alcohol related, but I'm wondering now if it is not the wine. If you think you're alone in this, you're not! Btw, I am a female too.
