Am I overdosing?

I have been mainly sober for 8 months, aside from drinking a few times recently, and taking a few painkillers from a friend. I forget the name of them but they were really strong so I made three last a week by taking small bites from it. I use to have a extremely high tolerance for opiates, and getting back into them a tiny bit recently due to pain and anxiety helped a bit but yesterday I went to my psychiatrist, and asked him for a prescription. He gave me 10 Norco's. I believe they are only 5 MG, and yesterday I took half of one, then the other half. Then another half, all spaced out. So that's two and a half last night, then I woke up, and took another one, and a half. Why? Because I am ridiculous. Anyway, when I woke up the second time my heart was racing, short of breath, and very afraid. I am also prescribed Viibryd for panic disorder, and just started my higher dose today, and also take xanax. I have taken no more xanax than usual, but I woke up after the painkillers with my heart racing, short of breath, and just very afraid. I do have severe panic disorder so I have felt this type of anxiety before, even worse, I am just afraid. My chest feels tight, my heart is racing, my jaw is clenched and I have to keep taking deep breaths. The more I worry the worse I feel but I know overdose happens like this, after having a tolerance, and then randomly going back and feeling you can take as much as you use to. I am scared, and just want to know if I should go to the emergency room or not? My panic disorder makes me paranoid that I am dying a lot of the time, but I need to post this because I need to make sure I am okay. I am not nodding out, my vision is okay, I am not that nauseas at all, I just feel pressure and am tense and afraid. I also mixed with xanax, and doubled my panic disorder meds today. Should I drink a lot of water? Deep breathing? Throw up? Any feedback would help.

Yes, he prescribed them to me for pain, he only gave me 10, I have bone degenerative disease and need to get to a dentist, but I have no insurance. i have decided I am not taking them again. I do have a history of addiction, and yes he still prescribed them to me knowing that. I am done treating my body without care, and despite how much pain I have, the only medicine I am going to continue taking is Viibryd, and my xanax when absolutely needed. Thank you for the help guys.

I am not a medical professional, so I can't diagnose you.  But the first thing I would say is it is never a good idea to take any meds not prescribed to you by your doctor.

You have a lot of chemicals in your body right now - both the meds, and the anxiety.  I would absolutely call your doctor's office and tell them it's urgent.  Explain your situation, and let their expertise guide you.

Is your doctor aware of your other drug use?  So many meds negatively interact with each other.  It's great that you're getting help for your anxiety, but you could be setting yourself up for failure by mixing your prescribed meds with the others.

Call your doctor.  I'm hoping you get the help you need to help you feel better soon!

Hello there!

Obviously, the biggest thing is, if you're EVER in a position where you think you may need urgent medical attention, it's not a good idea to seek advice on an internet forum.  You would be better suited calling your doctor in those kinds of situations, or just heading to an ER.

That being said, I would highly doubt you're overdosing, but you certainly overdid it.  If you remain concerned, you need to call your doctor.

Now onto the next concerns.  Are you saying your psychiatrist prescribed you an opiate pain killer for anxiety?  Or did you tell him you were having some type of pain?  Does your doctor know about your addiction history?

It goes without saying that you're on a very slippery slope here.  You not only have a history of alcohol abuse (and I'm assuming maybe opiates from what you alluded to?), but also, you have been taking an addictive narcotic to self medicate away your anxiety, and you're taking it inappropriately.  That's bad news.

While opiates help an anxious person feel better, it's neither an approved indication for prescribing them, nor is it appropriate, as eventually, with tolerance, dependency and addiction, the very pills that were helping you will end up making your anxiety MUCH much worse, plus then you'll also have new problems to deal with, which would be addiction.

You need to be completely honest with your doctor and with yourself, and get yourself some help for addiction now, before you get in any deeper.  We have a wonderful addiction community that I would also recommend you posting in.  The folks there are amazing, and they understand addiction, most of them from a first-hand experience.  Here's the link to that community:

Very best to you, I hope you find a reasonable treatment plan to address the anxiety.
