DIfference Between Anxiety Medications

What is the difference between all the benzodiazepines? I mean, why does a doctor prescribe Xanax to one person, Ativan to another, Klonopin to someone else? I know they're all "anxiolytic" (the ones I mentioned) but what makes one better than another? The reason I'm asking is because I take Ativan occasionally but it really knocks me for a loop (which isn't always a bad thing). Is there one that is shorter-acting that can get you through the moment that doesn't have long, drawn out after effects?

Namaste,

Different  benzodiazepines are prescribed by different doctors for a variety of reasons. One is the action of the medication itself. Some take effect faster than others while others will maintain a level within your blood for a longer period of time. Secondly, some doctors just like certain medications to use and finally each individual responds to medications differently and therefore the doctor may prescribe one or another.

Not quite sure. I do beleive xanax is stronger than ativan, ativan is a milder benzo, klonopin i dont know too much about but hear about it. I think klonopin is longer lasting.

Atvian kocks me for a loop too. lol.
