Newbie to Anxiety

I have been just diagnosed with anxiety disorder because i went to the doctor stating that i have heart problems (i.e. palpitations, heart racing, fear of death, impending doom, etc). Now im not truly convinced on this diagnosis, but from reading on the net and this forum i am seeing more and more people who have the exact same symptoms as i do.

My doctor told me to see a psychiatrist to help cope with my anxiety but i am wondering if there is anything more i can do. Please help me...i cant deal.

Yes, there's so much more you can do. The first thing is to know that there IS a way out (although when we're in the middle of it it doesn't feel so!) and that you can help yourself in your way through. Like Prisoner said, exercise can be very good, provided you listen to your body (i.e. don't overexercise thinking it will magically heal you -too much of anything is bad); the body releases natural "drugs" that will make you feel better.

Also, try not to isolate yourself, especially on the days you're feeling especially bad. Get out of the house, take small walks in the nature or in a quiet place in town, talk to friends or go visit them, etc., any social situation that you would enjoy under normal circumstances. I mean, the easiest thing to do is stay in, not want to see anyone and just brood and mope around thinking of your fears, but that's about the worst thing you can do!

Eat well -fruit and vegetables, cut down on fats and candy…- and drink a lot of water, juice and similar.

Watching a funny movie or TV show can be good to distract yourself for a while too. It probably won't just magically erase your bad thoughts, but it can help you to laugh and to relativize things.

Remind yourself that this doesn't have to last forever, that you can and will feel better one day.

Good luck!

I've had good results from intense excersize, accupressure, message, meditation, deep breathing excersizes, yoga/stretching etc. These ideas are all healthy for you and most are free, so try them out and see if they help. Good luck!
