Hi

I have been through therapy for some time. I always had a diagnosis of social anxiety but I am definitely a combination of both. I am seeing a psychiatrist for meds only. We talk but minimally. I have been on Strattera 60mg and Lexapro forever.

When I see socially anyone, old, young, men or women, my brain zeros in on what makes me the most uncomfortable, which is breasts, crotches legs.....

I think it is a by product of social anxiety, but I have tried for years to get rid of it with no success. I am also distracted when someone is talking to me and using his/her hands. Everything distracts and makes me uncomfortable.

I'm not exactly sure why the human body makes you uncomfortable.  We all look, without physical attraction we wouldn't reproduce.  We all have things that distract us.  The problem you're having isn't that some things just stick out for you, it's that it bothers you so much and becomes a trigger for anxiety.  If you're on medication and you still have this much trouble, you're not on the right med for you.  It isn't working.  And if you've been in therapy and you're still feeling like this, you have the wrong therapist.  Therapy is a tough go -- I've never done well in therapy -- but I still advocate it strongly because it's the best thing we have right now to cure the underlying problem.  Medication can only make the symptoms more bearable.  But again, if the meds aren't doing that, they're not working.  You might talk to your psychiatrist about whether he or she thinks your meds are working or not.

I think social anxiety is hard to deal with.  Have you been diagnosed with this or ocd?  What does help with social anxiety is practice.  Role playng.  Also observing others.  And remembering that no one knows what is going on in your head so if you try to appear calm on the outside, they will not know that you are very anxious inside.  When you say compulsive staring at body parts, what do you mean?  And most importantly, what are you doing to treat the condition?  Do you see a psychiatrist, doctor and/or therapist?
