Thank you for validating my advice. I feel better knowing you agree.
You should conceder talking to a therapist or a psychologist. Expeshally if your really worryied about what your doctor is putting you on.
Good luck, I hope things get better for you.
Many doctors are now using Abilify as an adjucnt with other ADs when the original medication just doesn't seem to be working. I can't say I've known of anyone being prescribed just Abilify, which does NOT make your doctor wrong.
There are many people for whom the SSRI's simply don't work. Have you tried any of the other classes of ADs? If you are hesitant to take the Abilify, you should discuss your options with your doctor.
Sometimes we have to try many ADs before we find one that works for us. The key is to give them a fair trial. It often takes weeks, and sometimes even longer, for many antidepressants to reach a therapeutic level and begin to make us feel better. Often we need to have our dosages changed if we are not feeling some relief in a given period of tiime for a specific drug. For those of us with depression, patience is a word we are all familiar with. It's possible you gave up on them too soon.
The other "issue" with any of the psychotropic meds is that they ALL carry some side effects. How those side effects may or may not affect us is impossible to predict as we are all very different in how we react to these meds. Speaking of patience again, side effects are another aspect that we have to allow some wiggle room for. And here again, we are all different in what we consider tolerable. I may feel a little dizzy from a particular AD but for you, maybe ANY dizziness is intolerable. And maybe that AD makes me a little nauseous, which I would find intolerable, but you could push your way through it. We're different. Most side effects go away in time. Most of them are more annoying than dangerous. But that is why we always need to let our doctors know about ANY side effects were having.
I can really only tell you to talk with your doctor. He/she needs to know how you're feeling about taking this med.
You can also speak with your pharmacist for answers to your questions about Abilify, or any drug. It's their job to know the how's and why's and reasons behind drugs and they can help you understand the reason for using the Abilify as an adjunct.
Are you in therapy? It IS possible to come out of a depression with no drugs, just lots of therapy. It's an option.............
I wish you the best.
Peace
