I am not familiar with the use of risperidone for anxiety. I have tried many meds, but that is not one of them. I have a friend who is Bi-polar and she takes it with a couple of other meds. Were you showing other symptoms besides social anxiety? There are many alternatives if your med is not working. Talk to your doc.( a psyc doc preferably) about your feelings on the matter.
I would have to agree that a combination of medication and therapy work the best. Medications can and will affect us all differently and they can take some time to start feeling the desired effects of the med, but remember that it will not 'cure' you of your social anxiety. I am on an SSRI and it works really well for me, but when I was going through anxiety the most important step that I took was to seek help through counseling. In my experience, when you talk it over and learn about the underlying issues of why you are anxious, it will give you the knowledge of how to confront and deal with it. Also, do not get down on yourself....every person has his/her challenges and you will definitely get through this one...keep us posted!
Social anxiety is a common anxiety issue. You are certainly not alone at all. It takes some time for medication to regulate in your system and get working properly. Ive heard it takes from a week to 2 weeks for this to happen. I would contact your psychiatrist, or whoever perscribed you Risperidone, and seek their opinion. Medicine works differently for everyone. What works for me may not work for you, and vice versa. Finding the right medication is a trial and error process that can be very aggrivating at times, but just remember to keep positive because you are on the road to recovery! Medication has changed my life. I have taken Lexapro and Pristiq for anxiety purposes. For me, Lexapro did not work, but I currently am on Pristiq and it has done wonders for me. Also, are you in therapy? Because medication and therapy combined is proven to be one of the best treatments. Medication lessens your symptoms of anxiety, while therapy gets to the root of the problem and helps build you up so you can learn to cope and be a stronger and happier person. It is great you have seeked help! Remember you are not alone, and you can fight this! Good luck
