Is it normal..

To not have a appetite while having broncitis? I've had little to no appetite for the past 3 days. I'm afraid it's something more serious.

I have had asthma all my life and when it is really bad i breathe in eucalyptus vapors----i use a vaporizer---and it breaks up the congestion very effectively.  Give it a try.
As the nurse says---no milk products. Makes for congestion and the calcium messes with antibiotic absorption.
Have your husband give a little acupressure up and down the sides of you spinal vertebrae----my favorite for relaxing those nerve channels.

*your*, not you're.  UGH

That reminds me (the eye popping comment, lol), if you're a smoker, do your best to cut down to minimal smoking, as that will irritate all of your inner respiratory "plumbing" and cause you to feel worse and will exacerbate your cough.  I know it isn't easy..I'm the worst offender in those kinds of situations, but it really does help the recovery process if you can cut WAY back.

Also, if your doc doesn't already have you on it (probably does), the main ingredient in Mucinex (Guaifenesin) is a WONDERFUL drug for bronchitis and pneumonia.  It's an expectorant and works to thin out the secretions, making them easier to expectorate (aka "hack up"..ha).

Guaifenesin is available by Rx, usually called Humibid, and it really is a necessity for these kinds of illnesses, plus it is VERY safe and easy to tolerate.  If you still have a lot of chest congestion, or are having trouble bringing up your secretions, ask the doc.  Sometimes they will just prescribe it, so you can take it in higher (more effective) doses, or they will recommend getting an OTC product (usually one of the Mucinex products).  I cannot say enough about that stuff, works SO well.  I've had bronchitis so much, and pneumonia multiple times, THAT was a lifesaver for me, made me able to cough up the mucous SO much easier.  Just something to keep in mind to ask the doc about.

Get better soon!

Yes, it's perfectly normal to not have much of an appetite, for many reasons.

Like GL said, hydration is super important, it will help loosen up the secretions.  You can pretty much eat anything that appeals to you, with bronchitis, the only kinds of food you may want to avoid are milk based foods...milk itself, ice cream, pudding, etc, as the milk based food items will thicken the mucous/secretions and make you have to cough more, and make it harder to cough the mucous up (which is important).  Thin, clear liquids are the way to go...jello, broth, tea, popsicles...if you have no appetite...at least consuming items from a clear liquid diet will keep you hydrated.  Again, other than avoiding milk items, you can pretty much eat whatever you want.  You will get your appetite better once you're feeling better.

You're most likely on antibiotics...which are rough on the tummy, which is probably what is responsible for most of your appetite loss.  If you have severe nausea, or vomiting, then the doctor needs to know that.  If it's just a lack of appetite, that's par for the course, just keep making yourself eat something, and most importantly, drink.

Hope you feel better soon!  Bronchitis is awful.  Being a smoker, every upper resp infection I get ends up as bronchitis and it's awful.  You cough so hard and so much, you sometimes think you're eyeballs will pop out.  :0)

animals will fast when they are sick----except for liquids (they "know" to hydrate?)---so it is quite natural for you to do the same. It can free up the energy used for digestion for use in combating disease. Lydia points out the necessity to drink fluids---lots of 'em. Juice (not the sugary drinks they call juice but real juice with natural sugars) helps and you can keep "nutrifide" (hey a new word) by adding some Ensure (just to Be sure)........
I know people who do three and ten day fasts as part of their "health-plan"---their OhMamaCare! Ha!......and they look forward to them because of how good they feel. You can re-invigorate your immune system.
Hey christine---why not see your dr. if you are so worried. It can never hurt and what if your fear---your anxiety about it---is really your intuition talking to you? Lydia: maybe a good question for next month would be--- how do we know the difference between our "anxiety voice talking at us" and the natural intuition speaking to us?
Stay hydrated and get some rest and the amazing body will take care of the rest.

It is very normal to lose our appetites when we are sick. While it's good advice to TRY and eat something, the more important thing is to keep yourself well hydrated. With an illness like bronchitis, drinking plenty of fluids helps "thin out" the mucus in your lungs and makes your cough  more productive by making it easier to bring up the phlegm. This is very important so it doesn't turn into pneumonia.

Gatorade is good as it contains electrolytes which are essential. If your throat is sore, you can warm it in the micro. Meal replacement drinks like Ensure are also good if you don't have much appetite. They supply a good dose of your daily caloric needs but also vitamins and minerals, as well as helping with hydration. Frozen fruit bars will help with a sore throat, add fluid and a small amount of vitamins. Jello lets your stomach believe it's eating something while keeping you hydrated.

Have you seen your doctor and are you on antibiotics?

Depending on the severity of the bronchitis, if you've been on antibiotics for at least 3 days, you should be starting to feel some relief very soon. Along with that, your appetite will begin to return, but if you've eaten very little during this time, start back slowly with soft foods eaten throughout the day rather than 2-3 larger meals.

We can go a very long time without eating, but not without fluids.
And their is a difference is losing our appetites and being able to keep food down. If you simply don't feel like eating, I wouldn't worry about that for at least a week. If you ARE trying to eat, but can't keep anything down, your doctor needs to know about that...........especially if you are also unable to keep even water down. That could lead to critical dehydration.

Post back tomorrow and let us know how you're feeling then, OK?
I'll be watching for your post.
Take care

You don't want to eat because your throat hurts.  Eat soft foods, preferably cold (because the cold is soothing).  Pudding, apple sauce, icecream.  If you can eat these things without vomiting, then you should be okay (assuming you are already under the care of a doctor).  If you can't keep food down, then let your doctor know.  You cannot go without nutrition, and you need to heal.  Blessings - Blu
