No appetite? A symptom of anxiety?

I havnt had an appetite for about 6 days now. My stomach will rumble and I will sense that it is hungry, but my mouth is so dry, and nothing sounds good at all. Actually, when I try to eat something I usually love, I almost gag.

Now, I'm a pretty little guy as it is, so I don't want to lose any weight, so I've been making myself eat little things throughout the day. I've def. been keeping hydrated for sure.

Things I can usually scarf down are half peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and a glass of milk. It makes my belly feel fool, but at the same time... I wish I could just feel HUNGRY, and CRAVE something like I could about a week ago.

Is this common? And will my appetite eventually come back?

Thanks guys.

ps: this has happened before, last winter... and it always would eventually come back as soon as my anxiety episode would end... but its just nice to hear the comfort while I'm going through this ****!!! =)

The dry mouth makes sense to me now... b/c the mouth produces saliva when it's in a RELAXED state.... when you are having anxiety.. you are obviously not in a relaxed state!

Sorry I forgot to answer some of your questions CaliGirl48.
Yes I'm def staying hydrated. I drink atleast 2 or 3 32oz waters a day... I may have a soda too. I constantly have to be drinking something. It's weird. I've always been like that though. =)

Do I exercise? Um... unless you call standing on your feet all day at work exercise... then yes! lol.

I really dont "exercise"... I know I need too. I hear that releases natural endorphines. Perhaps I will give it a shot. I just don't want to irritate my back muscles again the way I did. haha.

Thanks again for reminding me that these are all just symptoms of anxiety. It's been so long since my last episode that I tend to forget... so when I have the heart palpations, and the paranoid stomach, no appetite, trembling, dry mouth, ... I have to remember, they are all symptoms of my anxiety... THEY ARE NOT RELATED TO MY BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! =)

Thanks sooooo much guys for the reassurance. Thank you.

I had this for a little bit in the beginning of my anxiety. It was a little different for me, I just felt "icky" most of the time, not really thinking I could eat anything. In fact the only thing I ate for a month or so was salad with french dressing. I didn't have any problem drinking fluids, just the thought of eating that bugged me.

You are doing the right thing staying hydrated. How much and what are you drinking? This is a long shot, and I know you aren't an infant, but I know when my kids were babies the more I gave them to drink, the less they would eat. Fruit is good but I know that fills you up too.

My best advice is the advice that goes with just about every angle of anxiety. Try your hardest not to think about it. The more you think about it, the worse it will get. You know you're fine, and we are all here to remind you of that anytime you need it. So don't let the worry part consume you. Do you exercise? I don't much, but I know others have gotten relief from symptoms by taking a jog, or a run. I don't run unless I see my kids about to fall from a tree, so I did a lot of walking. It didn't help at first, but after a week or so, it really made a difference.

Good Luck hun..

Maybe ask your wife to make some tacos...that did the trick last time right??

=)

When I get like this, I eat a lot of fruit. Fruit seems to go down just fine. Like I also said, I eat a couple of p and j's during the day too. I drink lots of water as well.

As I become more relaxed... and the anxiety seems to free up... my appetite will come back. I know from experience.

And yes, I went to the Dr. last year when my whole anxiety spells starting happening. The appetite thing was addressed to him at that time as well. He did say it was anxiety.. and that my appetite would come back. And it did.
He put me on lexapro and ativan.

I took this stuff for almost 3 months or more... then decided to come off of them.
I saw a psychiatrist instead.. he seemed to have really helped me cure my anxiety!
I have been OFF the meds for over 5 months... and have been completely anxiety free.
Except for when my back starting hurting about a week ago. The pain was excruciating.. it was caused from over doing it... yard work and mowing 3 lawns in 2 days.

My back is feeling MUCH better... but what caused my anxiety was I kept trying to self diagnose myself with something, like Lyme Disease... MS.... whatever is associated with sore muscles... That's what brought on this anxiety.

My parents and wife are always telling me to "JUST STOP IT, YOU ARE DOING THIS TO YOURSELF!" Which I am...

Though the muscles are healing and feeling better finally... I still have the lingering anxiety. But it shall pass soon. I know it will.

Thanks for writing.

Dude this a very common symptom of Anxiety!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Do some deep breathing, and deep muscle relaxation techniques.... Tense up your muscles starting with your feet for five seconds... And continue all the way up your body.... This helps man.... By the way I am almost Ativan Free.....

                  Thank god....

                   Peace

Hmmmmmmm. This is kind of a new one for me. I really don't have an answer either, so I'm just gonna spin my wheels with you for a minute. I guess my questions would be: have you talked to a doctor about this? If it's happened to you before during periods of anxiety, how long did it last? Are you taking any medications that might be affecting your appetite?
It's VERY good that you are keeping yourself hydrated during this time. Do you think you could manage to drink something like Instant Breakfast or Boost or something from the health food store that has plenty of nutrition in it?
You say you've been eating "little things" throughout the day...........that's good and maybe right now that's what your body needs. As long as what you are eating is healthy...........not grabbing a doughnut or something with empty calories.
I'm not sure I'd be too terribly concerned at this point, but if you begin to lose weight, I would certainly see my doctor. While this could very possibly be related to anxiety, our bodies need a certain amount of fuel every day............and after 6 days of very little fuel, you must be getting very close to running on empty. I don't think I'd wait more than a week before taking this to my doctor.
Sorry for the lousy answer, hopefully someone else with more experience with this will respond. Keep posting, OK? And keep trying to eat!
Peace
