I apologize for all the typos in the above post! I wanted to add, antidepressants do make the brain work artificially, I only meant to say they don't create any artificial serotonin. They utilize the natural serotonin already being made by the body and alter how the brain uses it. And I'm not endorsing 5-HTP as the best natural supplement to take -- natural medicine is more complex than taking one supplement usually anyway -- I'm just trying to avoid scaring people with misinformation so they can have the full range of options open to them to make an informed decision on how to manage their problem.
Whatever you do don't stop the Effexor abruptly -- taper off slowly as you need to. We can't know, unfortunately, what medication would work best for you. While the above is true, therapy should always be tried first and should also be done while you're on medication, there is not guarantee therapy will work and when it dos work it takes a long time to do so -- sometimes life is just too horrible to wait to find the right therapist and often therapy just doesn't work. Also, there's misinformation in the above answer -- 5-HTP doesn't create artificial serotonin. Nor do antidepressants. 5-HTP is the natural metabolite of tryptophan the body uses to manufacture serotonin, along with B6 and other co-factors, so not only is this not artificial it's the natural way the body makes serotonin. Now, obviously it's a it artificial to get it from a supplement rather than from food, but it is the natural way to make serotonin. I also don't understand the term "psychotic" drugs. If above answer is referring to anti-psychotic drugs, the poster isn't taking any of those. The poster is taking antidepressants. Cubix,we've had this discussion before, you really need to stop generalizing your experience to everyone else. You're just you, you don't have anyone else's body, and how things work for you won't necessarily work that way for anyone else. You also don't really understand either how supplements work or how antidepressants work, which is fine, but it's best not to comment on science you don't have a good grounding in. I know you have a strong bias against medication and supplements, and you probably have very good reasons for that -- in many ways I share this bias -- but I also know that I'm one person for whom therapy has never worked and medication did help and supplements have helped as well and that sometimes that's the best a person can do despite the side effects. I still believe this even though for me an antidepressant ended my useful life. That's just me and my body and doesn't apply to everyone else. I appreciate you have the right and the duty to help people using your experience, but nobody has the right to their own facts. Peace all.
i too want to say that.
drugs might give some temporary relief but depending on it actually make it worse. also psychotic drugs have lots of side effects and many they not even mention. one example is artificial serotonin raising drugs including 5 htp which is commonly sold as a side effect free happy supplement. using these for extended periods can cause heart valve problems due to fibroid formation.
My advice stop takeing medication and get so.e theraphy...there are reason that they got worse. Medication helps to relief symptoms but when you get off them they come back worse. You have to solve the root cause of what is causeing you anxiety
