Thank you both so much.. so me always feeling lightheaded can be my anxiety? I have had anxiety for about 3 yrs now and at first it was very bad where i did not even leave the house not even to go to the store and then finally i made myself start doing things. It got a little better for awhile and i was able to do most things. Then for awhile it was like i was pretty much all better and was able to do alot of things and now i am back to the bad. I never want to leave the house anymore and i hate driving alone it scares the hell outta me. I am always lightheaded and i am not sure how to handle that and of course i think there is something really wrong with me. I just am not sure why i am lightheaded..
Hi Tacey,
Welcome. You are experiencing typical symptoms of anxiety disorder. The avoidance issue is also called agrophobia. The vertigo that you are experiencing is very well associated with panic disorder. I can't be positive without you getting checked out by a doc, but I'm pretty sure you are having panic attacks. Here's a few tips:
1. Get checked out by a doctor to make sure this isn't health related. If it's anxiety... follow the rest of the steps.
2. Do NOT look anything up on the internet for awhile. Seriously, just don't do it. The mind is a clever thing. It can convince you that you have issues wrong that you just don't have. You mentioned that this has become a ritual. Break it. Don't look up anything.
3.Try to learn some relaxation exercises and try your best to blend the ones you like into everyday life. I like (tapping.com).
4. Exercise and eat well. Take vitamins. Stop drinking/drugs ect.
5.Now, for the good stuff. When your next attack comes along do not fight it. Accept that it's a panic attack. No one ever ever ever dies from a panic attack. Accept that that is exactly what it is. This involves trust on your part (that's why you should def see a doc first). You need to know in your heart that it's just a panic attack. Then, once you see it coming, you know it's a panic attack. Don't run. Don't hide. Don't try to do everything in your power to get it to stop. That last sentence is the main point. Do not avoid it. Let it happen. Just let it happen. As a matter of fact, not only allow it to happen, but once you see that your still alive.... pat yourself on the back... and ask for more.
***Why does this make sense? Well, let's say you are scared of heights. If you stay away from heights for the rest of your life that fear will not go away. However, if you decide you don't want that fear anymore, than you need to confront it. You need to meet the fear of heights and not run. That's step one. Sure, there will be setbacks. However, keep trying. Eventually, the final step is to submerse yourself (in this case go to the highest point in the world) and just allow yourself to do it. Be with the fear. Allow it to wash over you. Once you surface, you will feel less fear the next time and so on. That's the same thing with anxiety. The truth is, we as perfectionists, are scared to death of anxiety attacks.... cause we know how hard they can be. We just don't want to have them. However, it's counterintuitive because our attempts to avoid them are what bring them about.
You can do this. Believe in yourself.
Anxiety/Panic can really be a bear and keep us from doing even 'normal' everyday tasks. The short answer to your question is yes....you can feel all sorts of symptoms from anxiety; even when you are not having a panic attack. First off you are very young, so chances you are fine medically, but getting the ok from the doc is always a good thing; even if you are afraid to go; I hate going but I go. The best way with dealing with this for me was going through talk therapy. This can be REALLY confusing and depressing when you initially go through this, but with understanding it gets MUCH better....keep us posted!
