Scared to go to the doctor...anyone else?

I've always been a 'worry wart', but not like this...I've got an ob/gyn appt tomorrow because I've missed my period. FYI, i don't think I'm pregnant, my boyfriend had a vasectomy. Anyways, I'm scared to death to go. I even been crying because I'm so nervous. It sounds dumb, but I'm afraid they will tell me I have cancer or something. Any suggestions on a way to calm down w/o medication lol?

Vasectomy's sometime fails and a few more opps are made. it can still happen so don't rule out pregnancy right away. Also, I have been to the obgyn and was told I have abnormal cells, I truely had major panic attacks about that for weeks after until the dr told me I wasnt going to die from it.

missed period can be caused by ALOT of things so:

Pregnancy
Stress
Cysts

there are a number of reasons but you can only get the answer if you over come your fear. try not to think about it too much, harder to do then to speak.

And not stupid at all, I freakout going to the dr's aswell.

GOOD LUCK!

As long as you are 100% sure that your boyfriend had a vasectomy, then you really shouldnt worry about missing one period. Sometimes you miss one just from stress, and abviously you are stressed out about this.
I understand how you feel. I havent had a period for 5mths. My GP told me it is because of the medication I am on, but I dont think it is healthy to go that long without one, but any of the ultrasounds they have done show nothing.
It could be a syst which is quite common.
I agree with the other comments about relaxation techniques, but if that doesnt work for you, just keep yourself busy doing things around the house.

Fear of the doctor is quite common with people suffering from anxiety in my opinion.  You can try the techniques listed above, but I believe that maybe you need to go a little deeper then breathing techniques or listening to quiet music....these techniques can definitely help in the short term, but understanding and confronting your fear is how you will gain long term relief from this in my experience.

Do you have a reason to be afraid of the doctor?  I also despise going to the doctor, but I know that it is the right thing to do.  You are going to the doctor as a preventative measure, which is GREAT.  Even if there were something wrong, catching any disease or problem early exponentially helps you overcome it....for example, I went to the dermatologists last year and had pre-cancerous cells that they removed.  If I would have not gone, then it could have been much worse.  Being proactive and going to the doctor is a smart thing to do in my opinion.

Being afraid of going is not dumb at all; we all have our worries.  I still hate going, but know that it is necessary.  Have you ever considered maybe going into talk therapy about your anxiety?

Hello there,

We all know appt can be scary but there's some way to make to less scary.

Deep breathing is something we hear pretty often here but it's the quickest way to calm you down and slow down your heart beat, lower your blood pressure, reducing muscle tension.

Another thing you try is visualization (preferably while doing relaxation technique), try visualize in a good way what will happen there at your appt and clear your mind from anything bad or  form mental images to take a visual journey to a peaceful, calming place or situation. During visualization, try to use as many senses as you can, including smell, sight, sound and touch. If you imagine relaxing at the ocean, for instance, think about such things as the smell of salt water, the sound of crashing waves and the warmth of the sun on your body. You may want to close your eyes, sit in a quiet spot and loosen any tight clothing.

Try listening to quiet music it can also helps while doing relaxation. Being calm is not something that you can tell your mind and it will do instantly, it requires you to work on it, you must believe in it and don't just do it for like 2 min and give up cause you think it will not work. It works.

Good luck,
M4
