What do you think...

What do you say to the people that say antidepressants are no better than a sugar pill... i'm petrified that I won't be able to find the right med to help with my anxiety, although zoloft gave me many many good years.
there has to be tons of people that had the same fear as me and it ended up working for them..

The Zoloft helped you before and it should help you again.

You've said yourself that you "messed up" and weren't taking it as you should and you now realize that was a mistake.

But.........you are back on it now and taking it as perscribed. You need to give it time to build up in your system again before you'll begin to feel the full benefits. I don't know what dose you were on before, but it sounds like your doctor is titrating you back up the ladder slowly which makes him a good doctor in my book. You've noticed some small improvements, so just be patient, which I know is very difficult.......but you know from past experience how much better you're going to feel before too much longer, so just hang onto that light at the end of the tunnel.

I understand your dislike of the Xanax, but that is just a temporary measure to help you get back to your old self. Just think of it as a cane you can lean on when the load gets too heavy to carry on your own. Once you're feeling better, the Xanax/the cane will be gone. Use it only when you really, really need it.

Being physically and emotionally tired is just one more nasty aspect for those of us who need these types of medications. But you also know from past experience, those feelings will pass as well. I just happen to believe that modern day life is physically and emotionally exhausting for everybody no matter how mentally healthy they are!

I can also relate to your fear of not getting better. I've been there a few times myself. But you DID get better. So did I. So you see........we BOTH freaked out for no reason!

You will get better again, I promise. (Just take your meds like your suppose to! That's me "yelling" at you! LOL)

It's REALLY good that you're seeing a psychologist! Do you like and trust this person? Do you feel even a little bit better after a session? If so, then you have nothing to worry about. The road to recovery is slow, but that's OK! You're on the road and that is ALL that matters.

Discuss your concerns about your meds with your doctor. For people like us, while it may be extremely difficult, it is SO important that we get our fears out there on the table. Keeping them inside just keeps us from being able to move forward.

You're doing everything right. You're doing everything you possibly can to help yourself and for that you should be incredibly proud of yourself.
Keep writing to us when and if things get overwhelming............the coffee is always on and you know you're among friends who understand the journey.

You can always send me a PM (Private Message) if there is something really personal you want to talk about.

You ARE going to make it.
Peace

Greenlydia, thank you for your kind words!! They were helpfully and very much needed. I do take the Zoloft, however in a bad bout of anxiety.  What happened was after letting a bunch of stress add up I wasn't taking my meds properly... I would take it only when I started feeling the withdrawal symptoms so I was taking it like once every two or three days! Big mistake!!!! I have been back on the zoloft for four weeks at 50 mg per day and 100mg per day for two weeks.. I think it has helped but I'm not anywhere near myself and don't know if it's just the process or the Zoloft gave up on me..I've seen little subtle Improvements that have been so slow...I have to take Xanax which I absolutely hate but it's only .25mg per day twice at the most... I am just so tired physically and emotionally and so scared as I said that I won't get better.. I do see a psychologist once a week and have a doctors appointment t Friday so we shall see..again your words were much appreciated and feedback is a,ways welcome :) God bless

Actually there is some truth in that statement. Drugs are metabolized by CYP450 super-enzymes generated in the liver. There are many of these. Genetically, there are various universes of people who are unable to metabolize certain drugs. A example of such a drug is codeine. A certain percentage of people cannot metabolize codeine. So if someone tells you a certain drug had no effect at all on them, they might not be wrong..

First, if sugar pills worked, that'd be great, wouldn't it?  No side effects, no withdrawal, no problems!  But of course we have studies showing that these meds do beat placebo, though not by a whole lot, and they tend to keep working whereas placebo effects tail off.  What is true is each person will process each med differently, and they trials aren't done very well or for very long and the results aren't that great, but they are better than placebo.

Everybody has an opinion and there are as many opinions as there are people out there.

The one and ONLY opinion that means anything at all is YOURS!
If you believe the Zoloft helped you deal with your anxiety issues, it doesn't matter what anybody else thinks. (I would be curious how they arrived at that opinion)

If Zoloft worked for you for "many, many years," is there a reason you are no longer taking it?
Was stopping the Zoloft a decision you and your doctor arrived at together? Was an increase in the dosage discussed?
Sometimes, meds DO just stop working for some people after being on them for years, was an alternative medication discussed?

I would strongly urge you to discuss this with your doctor. If you are still strugglying with anxiety issues, there are other medications you can try and you and your doctor can work on finding the right one for you.

You may want to think about getting into therapy to get to the root cause of your anxiety. Often the combination of medication to control the symptoms and talk therapy work miracles.

Please don't be "petrified" that nothing will help you..........you and your doctor WILL find the answer. I promise.
Write anytime you need to talk.
Peace
