I understand 1/2 lifes from nursing 101. Valium in metabolized in the liver and excreted by way of kidney. Valium is water soluable therefore it is stored in adipose tissue. Amount of time it stays there varies on the individual. Example 200 pound individual versus 120 pound person. I did talk to the pharmacist and she assured me this was a safe measure to take. I stopped valium 9/1/11. This is the10th of September. I am not in a knowledge debate. I wanted an outside opinion. The doctor who has been my dr. and works close with me has known me for 17 years. I can call him night/day 24/7. See him24/7 night day. BUT I am still human and wants some opinions from the outside world. Please respond. Micky RN Salisbury NC
Diazepam is usually not prescribed for long term use and 7 YEARS is definitely long term. Four months is the usual length of time a doctor will script for this med.
Diazepam should absolutely be tapered, especially after long term use. NOT tapering is NOT safe.
You may not be feeling any withdrawal symptoms yet due to the long half-life of diazepam, which is anywhere from 20-50 HOURS. I don't mean to patronize you, but in case you don't understand what the half-life means, it's quite simple. To make this easy, lets say that the half-life IS 50 hours. That means every 50 hours, 1/2 of the diazepam in your body is excreted. If you took 15mg, after 50 hours you would still have 7.5mg in your system. 50 hours later, you would have 1/2 of 7.5mg.............every 50 hours 1/2 of the remaining drug would be excreted until it was completely gone.
So, if you were on the very top end of the half-life scale, after 2 days, or 48 hours, you still wouldn't have excreted enough to feel any w/d symptoms.
I really don't know what adding 2mg of Klonopin will do on top of a cold turkey from diazepam. Personally, I'd call my local pharmacist, who IS a doctor of pharmacology and ask him/her for the facts on what your doctor is doing. They don't work for doctors and they don't get kick backs from the big pharmas, so they get to tell you the absolute truth.
Drinking lots of water will help flush just about anything out of our systems faster if it's metabolized by the kidneys. Diazepam is metabolized through the liver, excreted by the kidneys.
I do wish you the best.
Peace
