Thanks.  I am in cbt and that helps.  My therapist says it is normal for me to go up and down.  In my case, I go from anxiety and depression to normal and back again.  I never get manic but both my pdoc and therapist say that is normal for bp2.  I have suffered from depression, off and on, throughout my life starting when I was nine.  I am 54 now.  I didn't start with anxiety till about almost 3 years ago.  In 1997, my oldest son was murdered.  I think I kept a lot in as I was working with the detective and then the prosecutor with the case.  I have also had 3 surgeries in 3 years, the last one 3 months ago in which they took out my gallbladder. i started having depression and anxiety about 5 or 6 months after my first surgery in which they took 7 inches of my colon out.

I agree that there are so many causes for anxiety. It is confusing and scary, especially in the beginning, in my opinion.  There are numerous paths to treatment and I also agree that it does start out with your primary care doctor.  Explain to him/her your symptoms and get checked out.

For me, the combination of medication and talk therapy worked the best.  I am a proponent of SSRIs like Zoloft, but they are not for everyone.  Some choose not to take any medication....there really is not one way to confront it in my opinion, but the most important step I took was to get counseling to learn about the anxiety because I did not know how to effectively confront it and deal with it when I was confused.  I believe there is definitely truth in the phrase, 'knowledge is power....'  The knowledge gained through talking it over with someone gave me the power to deal with it....keep us posted!

Can you still suffer some anxiety even though you are on meds?  -- your words

Yes.  Medication often eases the fears/stresses so that the other components of treatment (therapy or counselling or intervention) are able to be utilized.  Medication usually does not cure anxiety.  I believe anxiety is most often a genetic component and thus this trait is inherited at birth.  Environment and life experiences can exacerbate the issue but rarely cause it (the exception is PTSD.  Unfortunately anxiety is a very common issue but there is treatment available for one to lead a productive life.  All the best ...

A lot of times it is a chemical imbalance, which can be cured with meds.  Sometimes it stems from a tramautic event, which can be cured with a combo of meds and therapy.  It all really depends on your situation.

Amxiety can be caused by different things; a fear of something. Treatment is usually therapy, sometimes meds.Lily

If we knew what caused anxiety, we would be getting rid of it alot easier.  There are many treatments for anxiety some involving meds, CBT, natural remedies etc.  A doctor is the first part of treatment.  You need to rule out possible physical problems and get advice on where to go from there. There are many things that can trigger the onset of anxiety.  No-one really knows what predisposes some people to anxiety disorders while others can cope with anything.  It's not an easy thing to live with, but you'll get a wealth of information right here on this site.
