lorazapam and effexor

My doctor thinks the answer to everything is another pill.  I have been on antidepressants since Dec 1997 and lorazapam at the same time.  I went up to 375 mg with effexor xr and 1.5 mg of lorazapam at night.  I couldn't sleep at night so I was put on zolpium.
In March, I took myself off 75 of the effexor and walked out of the fog.  Now I need to get off the lorazapam as it is only prescribed typically for 4 months, not 12 years.  I also want to go to bed on my own and sleep.
I have no appetite but gained 40 lbs.  I am tired 95% of the time.
I will be seeing a new doctor but what about the old one?  Isn't what she did unethical?   I am addicted and made more so all the time I saw her.
Can I just start reducing the lorazapam by 1/4 pill every week?

Sadly, many doctors believe that "more IS better," and the end result is some really messed up people walking around wondering why we feel like zombies. I'm glad you are seeing another doctor and hopefully this one will not be a "pill tosser!"
Please do not attempt to stop any more of your meds until you talk with your new doc! You've been on them a long time and need to taper slowly to avoid a really nasty w/d! Any taper should be done under the supervision of a doctor who understands these types of drugs. (Unfortunately, most don't!)
As far as your old doctor acting "unethically," that is a really personal call. YOU feel her actions were unethical, but "clinically," she did nothing illeagle. Stupid, yes, misinformed, yes............illeagle, no. She has left you in an emotional dumpster, but was apparently practicing the best medicine she knew, which is scary and why it's good you're making the break from her. Hopefully, your new doctor will get you back on track.
A word to the wise.............you can state your displeasure regarding your old doctor, but don't go to this new one ranting about what an idiot she was. (Even tho it's the truth) Doctors are a "tight tribe" and don't take kindly to one of their kin being roasted on a spit.
I wish you luck on your journey. Keep us up to date, OK?
Peace
