Xanax is prescribed almost exsclusively for panic, not anxiety. If used qd, (daily) its use should be limited to no more than four months. It can be used for longer periods of time if used on a strictly prn (as needed) basis. Diazepam, (Valium) is essentially useless for panic and is prescribed for very mild anxiety and as a smooth muscle relaxant. Diazepam can be taken for longer periods of time before efficacy wears off and dosage adjustments are needed.
I'm not entirely sure what your quesiton was, but if you're asking if alprazolam, (Xanax) is a good choice for "anxiety problems or problems in their home life," then my humble, non-medical opinion is a resounding NO! For general anxiety, there are far "safer" choices out there.
If this anxiety is on-going, then I would recommend therapy before jumping on the benzo band wagon. They can be incredibly helpful drugs, life-saving even, but they must be taken under the care of a very qualified practioner who understands how to use them. It is very easy to climb up the benzo ladder, much more difficult to climb down.
