this question is to green lydia

I asked a question yesterday and you answered it. I have another question about the Librium I was taking. I was surfing the internet for answers and found that there are fillers in generic librium and valium. They mentioned something about food allergies. I have food allergies. I can't eat fruit and have not for years because of acidic problems but oddly enough I could drink cranberry juice. I'm telling you the last three perscriptions of librium where smelly and disgusting. I even took it back to the pharmacy and they agreed that it did smell foul. You said in your answer yesterday that I should see a Psy.. I have been seeing one and he's the one that does not believe the drug could cause the symtoms I have, but if they are putting fillers in these drugs it could be anything!  If the librium bothered me why wouldn't the valium? Hope to hear from you. Thanks

Remember that even name brand drugs use fillers.  You may be able to tolerate a generic and not a name brand.  You may also be able to tolerate one generic and not another.  Fillers do not make a drug worse or better.  If you have allergies it can go either way.  The actual medication is the same so your initial symptoms should not worsen.

Once a drug goes generic, as long as the actual medication is equal, I believe they can use whatever filler they want. Obviously whatever the company making the Librium was using not only stunk, but gave you an allergic reaction. The pharmacist can probably tell you what is used as the filler.......you would think it HAD to be listed on the supply sent to the pharmacies. Millions of people have allergies, some of them very deadly. They should make it a law that ALL ingrediants be listed on medications. I wonder if you can still get name brand Librium? It's been around for a very long time, they could have sold all the rights. I know you can still get name brand Valium, it's made by Roche. Perhaps your p-doc could switch you? Have a talk with your pharmacist, get some facts and make your decision from those. Some doctors have a very difficult time believing that we lowly laypeople might have an experience they've never heard of. Hence your doctors reluctance to believe the librium could actually cause this kind of reaction...........how could it? HE never heard of such a thing.............
Even tho the two drugs ARE in the same family, (benzodiazepines) does not mean they would use the same fillers or be made by the same company. But I would tell the pharmacist that I wanted name brand Valium (Roche) and ask about fillers. You know you just can't quit these meds cold turkey...........talk to your doctor and if need be tell him you don't care what he thinks about the reaction you had. You're the one that had it, not him. Talk about switching or trying the Valium. You might give some thought to doing the same with your psychiatrist.
I really do wish you the best and hope that soon you won't need these types of drugs ever again.
Peace

I had never had a problem with this drug until recently. I started getting a burning mouth and my tastebuds were off. i thought it was something to do with gluten. I started eating gluten free products but saw no change and it just escalated into a sore throat and near the end burning in my esophogus. It was at the point where it burned so bad that when I tried to eat I thought I would vomit. I still am nervous about taking the other medication as it is in the same family of drugs. I have had a rough week. Lack of sleep and feel like I'm on pins and needles. Surfing the internet for information has opened my eyes to what these drug companies do. My doctor does not believe me when I told him that the librium bothered me. He said he never heard of anyone having this problem with this drug. I wish their was something out there that was non-addictive to use. i hate taking medication. Thanks for wishing me luck.

When you go to the pharmacy ask the pharmacist exactly what fillers are in the meds you are getting. I did not know there were fillers and it seems very dangerous for people like you and I who do have food allergies. I am glad you have a psychiatrist, I do too. I always feel better when I leave his office. May not last long, but at least I have those moments of peacefulness. Good luck to you. Please keep me posted.
