Is PDT acne treatment safe for someone with dermatomyositis?

I have dermatomyosistis and have been in remission for 11 years. I also have very oily skin and cystic acne. I was taking antibiotics for 7 years but I started having stomach problems and had to stop taking them, and am currently taking spironolactone but it is not entirely effective and I'm not comfortable with all of the risks. My dermatologist suggested PDT acne treatment and told me that it would not bring me out of remission, but I'd like as much input as I can get. Would the side effects of PDT bring me out of remission or is it safe?

Hi janee966.
The only reference on your question I could find,
is from " Andrews' Diseases of the Skin:
Clinical Dermatology"
which  states:
"The similarity to psoriasis can be striking and (DM) patients may suffer severe flares of DM if they are inappropriately treated with photo-therapy for presumed psoriasis".

I understand your PDT treatment is for acne and nothing to do with psoriasis, however the point to be taken is that photo-sensitivity is a factor in DM to be taken into serious consideration, before making this decision.
Have your dermatologist explain his/her position in detail to  give you at least some assurance.
Of course there are no guarantees in the medical field,
so I understand your need for more input on this.
Best wishes,
Niko
