Melatonin and 5 HTP are they bad?

I was told by a friend that Melatonin is wonderful for sleep distubances, and 5 HTP works well also. In researching them I find mixed opinions on whether people with autoimmune disorders should take them.  Has anyone used them, what are your results?

It is a natural amni acid used to treat insomnia, weight control, and depression.  I have friends that swear by it saying they have never felt better because it helps you sleep and controls stress.

My mother ran out of her sleeping pills and purchased a mixture that stated it had Melatonin in it. It also stated: Warning. People with autoimmune diseases should not take Melatonin.   Other than that, I have no idea why. I'm very interested in knowing. Also, please tell me what 5 HTP is?
Thanks
