myasthenia gravis?

I am waiting for the results for blood work for suspected myasthenia gravis.
My neurologist has put me on pyridostigm 60mg in the meantime for a partially closed eyelid.
It seems to help open the eyelid, but doesn't open it completely.Does anyone else that has taken this medicine have the same effect from it or does it work for the closing eyelid 100%?
I can take the medicine 4x daily.
Thank you.

Juli. Do not despair my dear.
I'm sure you'll do fine

You have done well actually with your weight loss.
Honestly, a gradual loss will be better sustained vs a rapid weight loss, that tends to come back easily.

--Coconut oil in place of other cooking oils will do a few things for you:
1. Boost metablolism
2. Increased energy levels
3. Strengthen your immune system
4. Supply efficient energy to the brain (even better than glucose)
and potentially prevent alzheimers, parkinsons, als, etc.
5. If used in "oil pulling" each morning, improve oral and dental health
and limit infections, which start from the oral cavity and seep into the body.

-- Consider doing Dr. Barnes Basal Temperature Test for thyroid function. Very simple. More accurate than any blood test for thyroid, as the blood test does not indicate cellular function.
to do, but you must do it precisely as instructed. Just look it up.
If you do this test, let me know the results, but please note that if you have an infection, it will not be accurate.

--I do not know what your diet is, but carbs are weight gaining factors, so low carb is the way to go. Avoid anything with sugar including artificial, white flour and anything processed in general. Eat lots of green salads and fresh vegetables and drink plenty of spring water, 1 hour away from meals.

--Aim for an alkaline diet and you may want to buy some PH testing strips
from a drug store testing. Just do a search for this, if not familiar with this concept. Easier to lose weight on an alkaline diet and also it's offers protection from serious diseases.

Please pm me if you need details.

New on this site.  Glad to see that people are still happy to comment and at least lend an ear and a bit of guidance. Anyway,  I have both MG and Marfan Syndrome.  My problem is that my test show that number wise I'm not a candidate for any type of medication.  Over the past few years,  I have gained a little weight.  I am trying to lose it.  I watch what I eat.  I exercise for 45 mins. to 1 hour in the pool to ease the stress on my body.  Over the past month I have lost only 10 lbs.  But I look at my legs and I want to cry my eyes out.  I'm not afraid to say but I weighed 239lbs. now I weigh 225lbs.  I am getting discouraged. I just don't see it.  I take Qysmia to help.  But it is way too expensive.  I may have to stop taking it.  It's $181 per month.  I'm on disability.  I workout for 45 mins.to 1 hour. Just depends on how I'm feeling.  I am just soooo discouraged I just don't know what to do.  Any suggestions?  I would appreciate your help. Thank you.  Juli

Hi snoopy272.

Sorry to hear about your MG issues.

(Toronto feels like my 2nd home these days. I was there on business & just came back to N.Ontario 2 days ago-I'm originally from London)

A Natural  cholinesterase inhibitor is  huperzine A and following is a free
PubMed study, but by the way it only makes a direct reference to Azheimer's , but not myasthenia gravis , but I think is worth looking into.

Progress in studies of huperzine A, a natural cholinesterase inhibitor from Chinese herbal medicine.

Huperzine A (HupA), a novel alkaloid isolated from the Chinese herb Huperzia serrata, is a potent, highly specific and reversible inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase(AChE). Compared with tacrine, donepezil, and rivastigmine, HupA has better penetration through the blood-brain barrier, higher oral bioavailability, and longer duration of AChE inhibitory action. HupA has been found to improve cognitive deficits in a broad range of animal models. HupA possesses the ability to protect cells against hydrogen peroxide, beta-amyloid protein (or peptide), glutamate, ischemia and staurosporine-induced cytotoxicity and apoptosis. These protective effects are related to its ability to attenuate oxidative stress, regulate the expression of apoptotic proteins Bcl-2, Bax, P53, and caspase-3, protect mitochondria, upregulate nerve growth factor and its receptors, and interfere with amyloid precursor protein metabolism. Antagonizing effects of HupA on N-methyl-D-aspartate receptors and potassium currents may also contribute to its neuroprotection as well. Pharmacokinetic studies in rodents, canines, and healthy human volunteers indicated that HupA was absorbed rapidly, distributed widely in the body, and eliminated at a moderate rate with the property of slow and prolonged release after oral administration. Animal and clinical safety tests showed that HupA had no unexpected toxicity, particularly the dose-limiting hepatotoxicity induced by tacrine. The phase IV clinical trials in China have demonstrated that HupA significantly improved memory deficits in elderly people with benign senescent forgetfulness, and patients with Alzheimer disease and vascular dementia, with minimal peripheral cholinergic side effects and no unexpected toxicity. HupA can also be used as a protective agent against organophosphate intoxication.

I also have Myasthenia Gravis. I can't take the mestinon because it gives me bradicardia. The neurologist tried to put me on predisone and it made my reflux worse and is making my pre diabetic condition worse.. I can't even take 10 mgs of it. Right now I have dropped down to 2 1/2 mgs a day. I have a problem with choking and slurring my words.. The low dose predisone helps with that but makes everything else worse. I'm in between a rock and a hard place, smiles.. Has this happened to anyone else..

I just read this post, which I hadn't seen when I replied to your other
post, as this one was already answered and not on the top.

So, yes, it confirms my own line of thinking, but pyridostigmine 60mg  up to 4x daily seems a bit aggressive, for MG which is not verified yet!!
I'm glad that it works though, but I would have used an iced gel eye mask
-sold in drug stores- which acts as a cholinesterase inhibitor when applied for 2-5 minutes over the eye.
If there are unwanted side effects, consider easing off the dose or frequency, but please discuss this with the Neurologist first.
You may make up the difference with icing-which originally was designed as test, but I can't see any harm if it used a supplementary treatment
to pyridostigmine, for now.

Note again that this is not intended as a substitute for medical advice.

I had a test on MG in my Homeopathy School Days back in Greece, popularized b/c  Aristotle Onassis (The Greek Tycoon) had this condition!
His dark shades were not just a fashion statement, lol!

Cheers!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi!
This cholinesterase inhibitor reverses the chemical changes which bring about the muscle weakness in myasthenia gravis (both ocular and general variant). The response to therapy may differ from person to person and if there is 100% eye closure then you may not regain will strength in the eye muscles. Please discuss this with your treating doctor. Hope this helps. Take care!
