negative ana's

I have profound fatigue all of the time and feel ill alot. I had surgery to remove half my thyroid about twenty years ago, and the surgeon said it was hashimoto's thyroiditis. My thyroid levels have been well controlled since then.  My brother has rheumatoid arthritis,  and type 11 diabetes. My sister had auto immune hepatitis and now has hashimoto's.My son has type 1 diabetes and my father died from a severe case of rheumatoid athritis. could my symptoms be caused by an auto immune problem even though my ANA test came back negative? Thanks

It sounds like it could be CFS (AKA: M.E.) Of course you should make sure that your physician has ruled out every other possibility before you ask him/her about CFS. Feel free to send me a PM if you have any questions on this. And remember that once you get a diagnosis, it stays in your medical records and you need to have continuous healthcare coverage.

A CFS diagnosis should be considered in patients who present with six months or more of unexplained fatigue accompanied by other characteristic symptoms. These symptoms include:

cognitive dysfunction, including impaired memory or concentration
postexertional malaise lasting more than 24 hours (exhaustion and increased symptoms) following physical or mental exercise
unrefreshing sleep
joint pain (without redness or swelling)
persistent muscle pain
headaches of a new type or severity
tender cervical or axillary lymph nodes
sore throat
