Depo Perova Shot and weight gain

I have been on Depo shot for my birth control method. I used to be on the pills, but I would get really bad migraines from the dip in estrogen at the end of pill cycle.
Here is the question... Is it true that you can gain weight from the Depo shot? My friend was on it and gained 30lbs. I have gained about 48lbs because my craving and stuff are intense.. Has anyone had this problem. I want to go back on the pill.. But I love the fact with the shot that I dont' bleed at all and don't have to worry about the mess, moodiness, and CRAMPS! I need to do things one at a time. But next on my to do list on getting healthy is looking into gettting a healthy weight and if I was havening a hard time loseing becuase of this Depo. Has anyone else gone through this? If you have and got off was it easier to lose weight?? Thanks
