Disasterous Depo?

I have been on Depo since about last August and I am going off of it now. Since then, I have gained over 25lbs, had horrible and wickedly insane mood swings, had a period that lasted from February 6th-May11th and have been reading all kinds of horror stories from other women who have had a horrible time losing the weight that Depo has added. I am just wondring if there are other girls out there who have had bad experiences on Depo and if anyone can suggest an alternative. I am considering going off of birth control for a while to let my body readjust and get back to normal. I have not had a period in over two months and while that is convenient, I never thought I would actually miss having it because at least it was reassuring. I am standing up in my best friend's wedding in October and I am going to have to kill myself at the gym in order to fit into my dress and I have read that a few women have continued to gain after going off. Is this true? Also, is it true that Depo destroys your metabolism? I know for a fact that it destroys the libido...when does it come back?? I have read a lot of postings from women who have had a very hard time shedding the weight that accompanied their birth control. Besides a sensible diet and a good cardio routine, is there anything else that anyone can reccommend? I would greatly appreciate any and all information that could be provided.

Thanks!

I havent had my period in so long, im very bloated, and moody/depresses alot. The shot is terrible, but getting off it is even worse... good luck to all you girls on it...

Its not true that it destroys your metabolism.  Many women do notice a slight weight increase, though.

The effects of Depo can last for up to about 18 months after your last injection.  It may take quite a long time to get your period back regularly.  This is normal.   I can only assume that it may similarly take a while to get the weight under control.

if you do take time off birth control, be sure you are using something effective, every time.  Many young women become pregnant while "taking time off" birth control.

As for weight loss, there is no quick and easy substitute for good old diet and exercise.  It shouldn't be about killing yourself in the gym.  Set up a program that you feel you enjoy, and that you can stick with for the long run.  Same with diet--don't severely restrict calories, or you will eventually become resentful and one day your self control may slip badly.

A sensible diet that nearly anyone can follow calls for 1400-1500 calories a day (depending on your starting weight), with a variety of fresh fruits and veggies, lean protein, and low fat dairy and whole grains.  Limit fast foods and convenience foods.

Its slower, but will last longer.  You will gain healthy habits you can keep for the rest of your life.

Med Help has a fantastic new Food Diary feature, that's really helping many members.
