My 72 yo father just suffered this last week. It began with severe chills/shakes which was b/c of 105 fever. Was hospitalized. Initial diagnosis was a bad UTI that led to severe sepsis. On day 3, we were told it was e.coli that entered his bloodstream and caused the UTI. On antibiotics since admission which was 7 days ago. The virus causes a 'mass' in one kidney the doc told us, and they believe it will shrink and disappear with the antibiotics. Was released this past Sunday, today is Weds. Eating well with an appetite, and taking probiotic yogurt too. Just now he told me he had a bit of diarrhea after eating some Fage 2% yogurt. I told him to stick to the Activia probiotic yogurt for now. I am concerned of the diarrhea, should i be? Doc said it was a miracle he survived. What should I be concerned with b/c all i'm looking at is if his fever goes up. He went for a check-up and his kidneys are working fine. The urologist will see him in a week and perform an mri on the kidneys. They believe the antibiotics are working well and he might not need to be on them for 3 whole weeks. But what do you think? Is recovery a while? Do you relapse with e.coli in the blood? How long until it's out?
