Bild in one eye?

Hi.

My friend had a pituitary operation in 2008 to remove a benign tomour, then again last year, and again 4 weeks ago, this time 13 hour op, where they went through the nose and opened his forehead.

He is very worried because he cannot now see from his left eye and his sight in his right eye is very distorted i.e. doulble vision? can't read can't see computer, can't see the television?

As it is only  4 weeks since the operation, he is concerned whether his eyesight will improve any ??

Can you help me on this please ??

Regards

noel

After 2 months, there should be some change in his sight so he should have some improvement. Is he under the care of the neuro-optho so that he is being monitored for  his eyes?

If his nerve was nicked or hit during the surgery or the tumor was tightly wrapped, the surgical report may note it - did you get a copy of the pathology report and the surgical report from the hospital? I would do so. I would get him a neuro-optho if he does not have one.

I am not optimistic about his chances for his eyesight at this point - the optic nerve is a very sensitive nerve and not a very forgiving one. He should be under the care of a good eye doc and see what can be done to reduce the swelling (as in meds) and what his prognosis is.

Hi
My father also had a pituitary tumour removed by his forehead. This is now 2 months after surgery.  He also cannot see through his left eye very well, he cannot see his far left side, only can see in front, like vertical and some days it is blurry.  His operation was also 8 and half hours long.  Doctor not sure how much was removed, he only sees the neurosurgeon in 4 days from now. Not sure if he might go for scan again. Have heard that we should allow for swelling do go down, and it takes time for optic nerves to recover after such surgery. My dad is also unpatiant with his eye, as he wants to go work again. I have search the internet couple of times for after surgery comments, and none that I have read has given me any information about eye sight after pituitary tumour removal.  Wish I knew if this was a normal side effect after removal.  All that doctors say, we must wait for swelling to be fully gone.
Good luck.

I do hope that he has contacted his doctors as soon as this happened. It can happen that larger tumors (and just guessing here that since they opened him up in a non-standard way, his was large) can effect one or both optic nerves. It may be temporary with some swelling but sadly, it can be permanent - as the optic nerve is not a very forgiving nerve when it is squeezed or cut.

He needs to not hesitate AT ALL - but get into a doctor immediately or the loss can or will be permanent. It may just be swelling - but he needs to get evaluated.
