Also the person that asked you what type of tumor, I don't think they understood that she had a pituitary macro adenoma which is not a tumor. I have read about this also trying to find out more about what mine might be. I guess the VA will be sending me to an endocrinologist in Nashville that was trained at Vanderbuilt. Anyway I have so many symptoms and I guess I didn't ask the correct question to get a response to my question. I'm just a little overwhelmed with this thing on my MRI. It is a 9 mm area. My eyesight is very blurry but seems to be worse on some days rather than others? Was your mothers like that? Also I have blank spaces sometimes on things I'm looking at. That's hard to explain. I think whatever I have may be pressing on an optical nerve.
Where did your mother have her surgery, just curious? Thanks, Diann
That only refers to the size, but not to the type.
In general, larger pituitary tumors tend to be non-functioning type which tend to grow fast and they can recur if they were not 100% removed. Often they are not completely removed due to how they grow up or down so it is important to get follow up in both testing and imaging.
It also happens that hormones may be normal or fairly normal post op, but may fail after which is why you have to get follow up.
Larger hospitals and university centers tend to have a pituitary center. Find one and get her in. It is very doubtful anything can be done for her sight it sounds like sadly she was not treated at a pituitary center or by a doctor or surgeon experienced enough and they hit her optic nerve...
The doctor is now just protecting himself... It is shameful. He should be reported. Get copies of whatever you can. MRI, surgical reports, labs etc.
Thanks a lot for the reply. It is a pituitary macro adenoma (4.2 * 4.0) in size.
As for the regular check up. There is none. The doctors just discharged us and that was it. Why I'm seeking help somewhere else is that when we tried explaining these symptoms to the doctor, he said the symptoms were strange and did not give us another appointmnet.
Thanks
I hope your mother is still under the care of a Neuro endocrinologist and getting regular visits. There is a saying that "once a pituitary patient, always a pituitary patient" so you must always remain diligent in your monitoring.
There is a special eye doctor to see, a Neuro optho so they can test they eye and the optic nerve.
I am worried in that you are not specific about the type of tumor. It is important to know the type so you know symptoms as well as the rate that it may recur.
She needs to see her doctor soon. I hope you post back.
