what is this fibroadenoma?

I just had additional viewings today and two ultra sounds.  On my left breast the doctor showed me what he has zoomed in on which was this big empty circle.  He explained that it looked big but was really only 2cm so now I have to have a biopsy, because he wants to make sure that it isn't malignant.  I don't have a problem with the biopsy, I'm sure this will lay my worries to rest.  Has anyone had the same situation?  I'm 40, never had children, I'm active in that I train for 1/2 marathons and I feel great.  I've done a search for this word fibroadenoma but all of the hits are relating to women in their 20's.....maybe I have the name wrong?  The radiologist just said this is very common in women....Just wondering if anyone else has more info out there to offer.

wow!  That is scarey that you passed out during your mammogram.  What is the difference between an adenoma and a cyst?  What do you have?  Do you have BC?

I think if you have a history of cysts and adenomas or lumps at some point they tag you with fibrocystic breast disease.  You can drink coffee, just make sure you go for the decaf.........trust me, you can get use to it....I did.  As you approach menopause the cysts start to shrink and eventually disappear.  In my younger says my boobs hurt all the time from cysts.....terrible.....I have past out during mammogram because they scheduled it at the time of the month thath they are real painful,,,and the tech pinched way too hard and poof,, out I went haha........I had so many ultrasounds that I learned how to read if it was a cyst or not...now they have shrunk, and something else decided to grow grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I'm for sure going through the biopsy, I'm not going to mess around and it sounds like such a simple procedure too.  I understand better now about the teens/20s and why they are not biopsied.  It's interesting why the human body gets rid of them at a young age but not at my age. haha  Like so many other things???  :)   However this  Leads me to ask more questions....I doubt I'll have it removed it's a little tender sometimes but it's not causing a disfigurement (is that a word?) so I don't see the point in going through an operation that isn't a "must."  But the biopsy that's a different story and if the doctor reccommends surgery then I'll go through that as well.  I trust the medical community that I'm involved with.  Thanks for your time and response it really helped and I appreciate it very much!

Thanks you for taking the time to respond to my concern.  I do drink a lot of caffeine about 3-4 cups a day during the work week and about 6 cups on Sat. and Sun.  I love the java but maybe it's time to limit myself.   I'm interested to know how they diagnose fibrocystic disease, I've never even heard of it.  Also I'm curious to know why and how these cysts are formed especially if so many women have them.

Fibroadenoma is a benign condition and is quite common. It is wise to have it biopsied at your age ... when they are found in young (teens/20s) they are often not even biopsied and will go away on their own. In older women they can even be removed if they continue to be a cause for concern.  Regards .....

On ultra sound a cyst looks like black solid  balls, if they are painful they can use a needle and aspirate fluid from them.  Adenoma is a benign tumor(not cancer).  If they are ever in any doubt or of suspicious nature they will do a biopsy. It is quite common.
If you are diagnosed as having fibrocystic breast disease you will have many of these cysts and they will keeping an eye on them with each mammogram. Stay away from caffein, maked cysts painful.
