Mastectomy Suggested for DCIS

I had my biopsy on Tuesday and heard back from my surgeon yesterday afternoon.  I have DCIS, high grade, comedo necrosis, encroaching very near one margin, very dense breasts, age 43 with a 20 month old daughter.  I have had 4 other biopsies for fibroadenomas in that breast and am slowly losing most of the tissue that is left (I am a 34 A, but the breasts are slightly asymmetric with the right being smaller).  My surgeon, over the phone, suggested that I consider a mastectomy on that breast, possibly even bilateral.  Primarily, this is due to the nature of the DCIS, the possibility of recurrence for the future, the possibility of it being infiltrative if it does recur, my age, breast denseness, and the fact that there is already very little tissue left in that right breast as it is.  That sounded a little dramatic to me, but after some research and consideration, I think that it might be a good course of action.  What do you all think?  Are there any women out there who have had a mastectomy after a diagnosis of DCIS?  Granted, the DCIS is not so much the issue now...the issue is my future, and how best to proceed.  Thank you for your comments!

Thanks for the  message, I sent you a personal note.  And Sue Young, thank you for your message also.  I will definitely have to take some time to sort through your info, and I greatly appreciate it.  I am still pretty much reeling from all of this, but at least I'm not panicked.  I feel that I will be able to make informed decisions now--thanks again for the info!

I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but you will get thru this with much strength and support!!!.   I am 46 years old and I had the same diagnosis on April 15th of this year.   My choice of surgery is a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction and I am scheduled for surgery May 17th. I look forward to moving on with my life and getting this ordeal behind me.
Sue Young has been a world of information for me!  Keep a positive attitude, and know that this is just an unplanned journey in your path of life ;)
Stay strong, and do what you feel is right for YOU.
