microcalcification

I am concerned about having a biopsy.  I have a very minute cluster of microcalcification in my right breast in the upper right quadrant.  I would like to know if the biopsy is really necessary since the cluster of microcalcification has remained "in situ" and stable for the last 5 years.  I'm also concerned that if the breast is disturbed with needles and probing that this may tigger the cancer cell ( if cancer cells are present) to spread.  I know very little in this subject. Can someone enlighten me and let me know what are the chances, of having breast cancer due to microcalcification.  Very worried.  CS

Hi,

Microcalcifications are tiny specks of calcium in the breast tissue that need to be investigated further to rule out cancer.

The microcalcifications if large or clustered are usually biopsied for a confirmed diagnosis. Most calcifications are usually benign.

Carry on regular breast self examinations and report any abnormal features to your doctor.

These microcalcifications would need to be investigated further to rule out cancer and come to a probable diagnosis.

This is the normal course of management in most cases of microcalcifications. A biopsy would need to be done to come to a confirmed diagnosis.

Do let us know what your doctor tells you.

Hope this helps.

Microcalcifications that are clustered in certain patterns do raise concern. Cancer cells can't be triggered or activated by a biopsy. If they are present they are and if not then they aren't. If a biopsy has been recommended then I encourage you to follow thru with the procedure. If there is something present then you definitely need to know this and go forward with treatment.
