mammogram

I am a 51y/o white female who is not premenopausal.  I had a routine mammogram and then a diagnositic mammogram, and finally an ultrasound to confirm the dr.'s concern with architectual distortion of my breast.  Now she is recommending a procedure, stereotactic biopsy.  Are there statistics regarding the likelihood of cancer?  Should I be alarmed?  Should I get a 2nd opinion, now or later?

Hi,

'Architectural distortions' is disruption of the normal arrangement of the tissue strands of the breast resulting in a radiating or haphazard pattern.

Do you have any history of surgery in the past to the breast?

Architectural distortion can be seen in case of cancer, a surgical scar, fibrocystic change, and in some cases, the superimposition of breast tissues. An architectural distortion should be further evaluated, and, biopsy is the recommended for a confirmed diagnosis.

You should relax and go head with the investigations requested.  A biopsy would help to give a confirmed diagnosis.

Do let us know if you have any more doubts. Let us know about how you are doing and how the biopsy procedure goes.

Regards.

I'm sure there are statistics as far as percentages go but each and every case is different. I would have the biopsy first and then go from there. Since you've had 2 mammograms and the Ultrasound I see no need for a 2md opinion at this point. Only the biopsy results will give a clearer picture of the problem. You could ask that your films be read by a different Radiologist but I doubt that all 3 of your exams were read by the same Radiologist anyway.
