4 1/2 month Kitten Extreme Personality Change

4 days ago, one of two energetic playful and extremely loving kittens started acting strangely. She was meowing constantly and just walking in 4 foot area and looking all over the place.  We could tell something was very wrong. Vet visit ended up in a shot of steroid but no absolute diagnosis. Suggested followup in 4 days.  4 days later, vet just stated she is looking better and recovering..Something is very wrong and something happened. Literally night and day. We lost our kitten to something but dont know or understand.
She follows us but no longer playful at all.  Not loving at all. Sits with us but at a 4 foot distance. Purr is so very soft and not often. She would come up and face kiss all the time constantly. Does not ever and almost seems irritated to get her to kiss. We asked if a possible stroke happened but vet stated no.

Please anyone ever see anything like this?

PS-Have you thought about....GENTLY...telling your friend that you were disappointed in his care of your kitten?  I know it ain't easy to do it nicely LOL.....but, it can be done!

We took her to another Vet that following morning. They ran a gammut of tests and explained what it might be.  FIP is a possible.  Her belly looks a little pot bellied as well and she was running a temp just below 103.  We have her on antibiotics while awaiting results of test on Monday. You are all right.  The first Vet who is also a personal friend should have done an awful lot more.  He is a personal friend so I will not bash him but I am disappointed with the lack of thoroughness.

It appears the anti-biotics might be working a tiny bit but we might just be hoping too much.  Thanks all.

I totally agree w/ both of the posts!!  Your vet should not be dismissing your kittens symptoms.  The steroid is just a "band aid" when the vet doesn't know what other treatment to give our cats.  GRRRRR, makes me soooo mad!

I have a feeling that it might be heat related!  If not, then I would get another opinion!

A couple of questions- was her urine checked?  And, how was her blood work results?

Don't let this go....something is definitely wrong.

Did the vet check her eyes?  Did she lose some sight or gone blind? Can she hear normally?  A sudden change in her senses could cause the personality change.

I agree that the vet is an idiot.  I dislike it immensely when they give steroids or antibiotics not knowing what else to do.

thats terrible when somthing so drastic happens and we cannot find a good explanation, Your Vet sure shouldn't be shrugging off your concerns so easily....and why the steroid injection for NO definite reason? that makes me extremely angry that Vets use this like a 'go home and take an aspirin' type of cure all.....steroids can cause many health problems and shouldn't be used when theres no defined reasoning to.
I'm sorry I can't offer any explanations either. If trying anothr Vet as I would, be sure to dig alot harder for explanations....ask them to do the RESEARCH for you if they cannot come up with some answers, for heavens sake thats their job.
One comment I will make is she perhaps going into an early heat cycle? at 4 months old that seems rather young, but possible. They can undergo drastic personality changes when this happens and the hormones become active. I guess you would know the answer yourselves if the behavior again reverses itself in a few days or weeks.
good luck and please keep us posted.
