Injured hind paw.

My cat got his left hind foot (paw) caught in piano lid (piano keys cover).  He was dangling with his foot caught in it and screaming in pain.  We opened the lid and he got out.  His hind leg instantly swelled and there is a sore on it from where it was pinched.  He seems to be walking on it, but you can tell he's not putting a lot of pressure on it.  He's jumping up, but again, you can see that he favours the other foot.  It's still quite swollen.  He let's me touch it and examine it.  I don't find anything different with it except for it being swollen.  I've already called my vet, and he won't give me any information over the phone.  I just don't want to stress my cat anymore by bringing him in if it's only a tissue/muscle injury and will heal on it's own.  How can I know for sure?

Thank you for your reply, FleeceOnEarth.  It happened Friday evening.  His foot is still swollen, but the swelling has come down.  I'm pretty sure he'll be ok.  It'll take time to heal, but looks like nothing serious.  Again, thanks for your reply, it helped!

How long ago was it that it happened?  It sounds like it is resolving itself, but I understand you don't want to wait if its something serious.  I don't think it is, since he let you examine it and is jumping.  It being swollen is not an indication of a serious injury by itself, but I would monitor it.  I would also keep him in an area where he's more confined and can't jump up so it can heal if you can.  If it stays swollen more than a day or so or the swelling gets worse, or he develops any other symptoms, I'd consider taking him to the vet.
