Drug interaction- Propofol

Our cat was given Prednisolone to control swelling of the tongue due to tumor. One week later, for an exam, our cat was given Propofol for sedation. The following 2 weeks our cat was not herself, almost demented. Finally, at her last exam our doctor reported an extremely low pH (7.1) and increased chemical imbalance.  Are there specific known threats of combining these drugs?  Thank you

Thank you for taking the time to read and comment.  I believe the pH level was done in the blood panel, which is why our vet said the normal should be 7.4.  An i-stat ec8+ cartridge is shown as the method for testing.

And our initial concern was that Propofol Infusion Syndrome is the cause.  Our research has found that high doses of Propofol used in critically ill patients in combination with glucocorticoids (Prednisolone) can cause the syndrome.  We gave Prednisolone twice daily for a week before the Propofol was administered.  So we are also curious what a normal dosage range of Propofol is for a 5.5lb cat?

This was administered because they had to thoroughly inspect the mouth area and she did not want that to happen.  It is squeamous cell carcinoma being treated.

That's odd.  I worked as a vet tech for 8 years, and never heard of using propofol for an exam, unless the exam included examining something paticularly painful or the animal was very uncooperative.  I do not know of interactions of these drugs you mention... have seen them used together without incident.  But every dog is different, and yours may not be reacting well.  I suggest you adress these issues with your vet as soon as you can.  Blessings - Blu

hi...sorry to hear abt your kitty...I am in a rush this am. and going out for the day..but will try and give you a very quick reply and some links.
first of all a PH of 7.1 isn't low...its HIGH...normal PH should be between 6.5-6.8 a very small increment. 7.1 means his urine is quite alkaline...and perhaps he is experiencing crystals in his urine, which can be quite painful....did the Vet check for crystals?

propofol is normally seen as a safe anesthetic medication, but all can have side effects.. I've never read that there could be a reaction between the two mentioned.
how long has your kitty been on the prednisolone? long term use of that med can cause diabetes...

propofol can also cause Heinz body Anemia in some cats...I will give you a link to this info..

you had best discuss your findings with your Vet, wishing you both our very best♥
