Foggy / Dry Eye

I have a 8 month old domestic house cat. I noticed that one eye is almost foggy and dry looking. His eyes are both green but has a ring on the inside of the outer part of the color that is almost a yellow/orange color. The whites of that eye are also a red/bloodshot color. This has just begun today within the last couple of hours.

It does not seem to be irritating him as he is blinking both eyes as normal, he is not squinting, and is not bothering it with his paws.

Also when you look at him with the light to your back the one eye shines like it would at night, but the other eye does not.

No vets are open at the moment and I was just looking for a what this may be. Thanks!

Vegas is doing wonderful. No more issues with his eyes which is great. Keeping him away from those skanky cats on the corner so he doesn't get Kitty Aids! XD

How have you been?

HI!!!!  How are you?  It's nice to "see" you again!  How's your fur ball doing?  =D

This sounds a lot like the issue I had with Vegas. He wasn't reacting to any movement out of his one eye but it didn't seem like it was causing him any pain.

Take him to the vet and it's probably going to be your best bet to have bloodwork done. They can test for a vast array of issues, but it is a little more expensive then some people prefer. I think mine cost around 130. Like Zodiac said, it could be any one of those things. Eye issues are the worst thing I've dealt with while having a pet.

Hopefully the blood work will come back with a high white blood cell count because that will show there is an infection. Antibiotic and eye drops are relatively inexpensive and work great.

Please keep us updated. I'm sure everything will be alright.

NOOOOOO!  Don't test BOTH eyes, only the left eye.  It's important to know if she can see out of the left eye.  Cover the right eye up, and then put your finger close to the left eye.  We already know the right eye is fine.

Glad to hear that she's not vomiting.  Please test her bad eye only, and let me know how it goes!  =D

Hi!!  Sorry, but I gotta throw some questions out there!  =D  Is the kitten squinting that left eye?  Is it watering?  More vomiting than usual?  Can your kitten see out of the left eye?  Test your kitten's eye yourself-hold the kitten in your arms (or get someone else to do it) and cover the good eye, bring your finger close to the bad eye.  The kitten should blink.  If not, than the kitten needs to go to the vet.  It could be kitty AIDS, leukemia, autoimmune disease, glaucoma, or a simple infection like the other post on this thread.  From what you've described, it is NOT a vein issue.

Please keep me posted!

Congrat's on a successful outcome.

Eye infections are common in cats. Yours was a responsible course of action.

Tuna flavored medicines are one of the great mysteries of cat life.

Why not? We have cherry flavored medications for us people. I'm still waiting for a chocolate flavored medicine, though. :->

I am SOOOOOO glad that you came back with the wonderful update!!!  =D  What great, great news!!!!!  I'm happy that it's only an infection.  What a wonderful, caring pet owner you are!!  Your baby is lucky to have you!

I most definitely have heard of kitty AIDS!!  That usually affects both eyes at the same time!

I wish you and your kitty the best, and with time, Vegas' eye will be better!

Take care!

Sorry it's late on an update, had a family emergency on top of everything now too.

The blood tests came back negative for glaucoma, leukemia, and kitty AIDs.....(yes, their is such thing as kitty AIDs) Also the test came back negative for anything dealing with his liver and kidneys. However his white blood count it up and the vet said it can be caused by two things:

Stress where endorphins are being released causing the bone marrow to produce more white blood cells. The count was to high for that to be the cause though.

Bacterial infection was the other which is what we believe is the culprit now. There was an additional test which would have tested for toxoplasmosis but cost 140 dollars alone.

Vegas is now under going two different eye drops to help calm the inflamation on his eye and to help with the infection. He is also on a wonderful smelling oral antibiotic (smells like tuna fish so he LOVES it!).

After the first day of the medication the eye has cleared up and he is more active then ever. It appears his vision may still be affected from the infection but I think that is because it wasn't treated right away. He can still see with it, just not completely normal.

Happy it's taken care of and not terribly expensive. Around 300 after medication and all vet work.

That's okay!

If the pressures in the eye are low, that's the total opposite of glaucoma.  That's what I was worried about with your kitty.  Does your vet have any ideas at all?  What are the suspicions?  My gut tells me that it might mean something and be very important that it's only one eye and not both.  I don't know what though!

I've actually been doing a little research to see if I could find some sort of explanation.  I was planning on posting a link, if I saw something that could help!  I am still looking, if I see something I will post it!

Please keep me posted.  I'm sure that it will help other people in the future, too!!  =D

I wasn't upset by your comment, sorry if I came across that way.

The new vet took a look at him and said the front part of his eye is inflamed. Also the pressure within the eye is low so it is dilating to add pressure. She is going to give me some drops to help fix both situations.

Also they took blood work to test for anything else. I'll know more tomorrow.

Hi, you missed my point!  I gave you an example of what COULD happen if you let an eye problem go and not take it seriously.  I did NOT imply that your cat has eye cancer, but there are other serious eye conditions as well.  I was just giving you an example.  That is all!

Well I took him to the vet and it appears his blood vessels in the eye are larger than normal and so is his retina. The eye is not responsive to light either. Unfortunately the vet said he can not diagnose anything because it's beyond his realm of knowledge in Ophthalmology (I believe that is right).

So now I have another appointment scheduled for him today at a clinic in town that specializes in that kind of stuff.

My cat, his name is Vegas, is acting normal still and is in a feisty mood as normal.

@ Zodiac: His eye is not swollen and what makes me think differently from your belief is that fact this has happened before and cleared up once before. Hopefully I will know more by the end of the day and not have it cost to much.

Hi, there are all kinds of eye problems, and some of them can cause blindness and lead to glaucoma.  That orange copper ring around the eye sounds very worrisome to me, and I would explain the situation over the phone to the vet.  I bet they'll get you in much sooner, possibly the same day.

I had a cat about 5 yrs ago that had eye cancer, and his eye swelled up.  It caused glaucoma and another eye condition called uveitis (the uvea is part of the eye, near the retina).  He lost site in that eye and eventually the cancer spread.

This just goes to show that eye problems should be taken very seriously.  I am not trying to scare you, just trying to prevent the same thing from happening to you-not that it's cancer, but it could still be a serious eye problem that needs to get checked out.

Please, let me know how things go!

Well it's late for an update but I made a vet appointment for him a day after this had occurred. When it was time to take him to the vet his eye had cleared up and there were no signs that anything was wrong. The vet couldn't explain the symptoms nor see anything wrong with his eye.

The other night I was going to bed and I noticed his eye was the same way as it was before. I figured I'd just wait a day and see if it would clear up before taking him to the vet. Yesterday he acted very "sick" like and wasn't very active or vocal. Later that night he snapped out of it and is back to his old self. The only bad part is that his eye is still the same today. Doesn't seem to be bother him though but I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow hopefully to get it checked out.

Any ideas on what this may be?

The first thing I think of is blindness in that eye.  This happened to a neighbors cat.  Or cataracts maybe?

Good luck!
