"Get off the computer, Mommy!"

Akira did something else really priceless.  Until I bribed her with her favorite treat, she wasn't going to move either.  My computer is a desktop that is stored in a computer armoire.  The keyboard and mouse are placed on a slide out shelf.  Akira decided she wasn't going to wait for "Mommy" to finish what she was doing, so for the first time ever, Akira jumped up onto the slide out shelf and sat on the mouse.  She had no intention of moving either.  I knew why she did that, so all I could do was laugh at what a clever move that was.

For sure!  I agree that author has absolutely no clue and never had a pet.  I've never known any different than dogs and cats both knowing full good and well all the names of the members of the household.  That means all the human family members and all the names of all the other pets.  And, they get the names right, too.  They absolutely do know each and every individual's personal name.  I agree that it has absolutely nothing to do with the food dish--unless it's meal time.  But, that's totally appropriate, so there is no problem with this.

They do understand, I agree! I talk to my cats like they're people-I'd be terriblly lonesome without them! And I've heard my fiance doing the same-not to the level I do, I talk all day long to them about any old thing! I read an article once that just incensed me, the author stated that animals don't know their names, that when you call them they just think it's food time and that's the only reason they come. Then why does the correct cat  come when called, regardless of which nickname used? And when asked "where's your toy?" or "want to get busy" (our term for the laser toy) they react appropriately, not go sit by the food dish? Clearly, the author never had a pet and didn't know what the french she was talking about. They even seem to understand when you need a hug instead of play time.

Pika did understand.  Pet dogs and cats living with a family of humans all learn and understand all the names of the humans and all the names the human family calls each individual pet, too.  These critters do understand.

My Pika could go out and find his sister Eiva.  They fight all the times.  When dark, his sister not home yet then I asked Pika to go out and find his sister Eiva.  Not sure he understood or not but every time it worked.  They both came home few minutes apart.  Now I miss Pika so much....
