Male cat neutered two days ago vomiting yellow bile, won't eat or drink! Help!

I just had my two cats spayed and neutered, as well as rabies vaccine, on Tuesday, Luna and Max, 6-7 months old. When I brought them home, Max seemed to be great, he ate, and drank, and was doing fine. Luna I was worried about, I gave her tramadol, and she did fine. Then on Thursday night I gave it to Max, thinking he was in pain as he wasn't acting himself. He scratched me, and spit out the 1/4 of the 50 mg tablet, then he frothed from the mouth. I just decided not to try that again. The next morning, this morning, there is vomit on the floor, yellow, looked like urine. Then afternoon, Max is caught heaving and vomiting again in 3 different areas. I used a syringe to give him some water, and he held that down for at least an hour. Then he vomits again. And just a few minutes ago, once more, but a quarter size, and it's yellow bile. I don't know what to do, because he was a very healthy cat and eater. I call the humane society, and they say this isn't related to the neuter, but to bring him in tomorrow, if still vomiting. I don't have anymore money left. I don't know what to do! Please help! Thank you.

Well as always Opus has covered it so well. Listen to "Yoda Cat", Opus is excellent with this.

Metroconizole is Very harsh. It must be administered according to weight. That is how awful it is. Now he my indeed need this , it does have it's purpose.

If your baby is not feeling better in a few days---DO NOT go back to this shelter. They do not know what they are doing, that is why they are giving you everything, hoping something works....UGH!!!.... Please take him to an Emergency animal clinic or your vet.

You know some of these shelters mean well, but should really stop at medicating . That is really for only the vet.

Please let us know how Max is doing in the coming days.

Thanks, CML

HOLD IT!!!!
you were given all these dewormers WITHOUT a test to be sure they even have worms?
these are all very strong(and potentially lethal) meds and should never be used unless there is good evidence that worms and/or parasites are present....and not all at one time either ....
IF YOU get confirmation they do have parasites than you will need to use but do so one at a time....too much at once is very hard on their systems

also a warning there have been many adverse reactions to the Spot On treatments( I believe profender is a topical..right?)

keep an eye on the red area near Max's incision, he may need an oral antibiotic but if its minor it can clear on its own

I can give you info later on how to transition to wet food and OFF that dry stuff but for now lets deal with one thing at a time....

I will include reading one the meds you were given...keep us posted

I can't even find where panacur is used for cats ????
only dogs and larger animals...

I'm concerned that he might have an infection.  If anything they gave you is an antibiotic (is that what the metronidazole is?  I can't remember for sure) do keep giving it.

Thank you. It would be the Tampa, Fl branch. I noticed that Max has a blister on the incision, and it looks red in the side they did the tattoo. I was reading the meds they gave me. The one initailly given for both was topical prodefender. I didn't apply them on either cat thinking I would wait and research first. They ask you if you'd like anything else done for the animals, and you say deworming, and they give you the meds to use on your animal, instead of doing that for you?l? That's insane, it's like a macdonalds drive they restuarant over there. Then, after he is sick, I tell them, I have not used the de wormer, and they send me home with metronidazole and panacur!  If you ask me, he probably got diarrhea from the whole thing and it caused an infection in the incision, or there was just an infection. I never noticed it until today. It didn't look this odd before. So I am using the metronidazole (he hates it, starts foaming at the mouth), and since I saw the redness and scab last night it smelled, I used bactine there, so it disinfects the area.  I'm just going to stick with one at a time treatments at this point. He's doing great so I don't know if I should use the prodefender or the panacur next. He is obviously not good with oral medications. I haven't heard much about either product, but he and his sister are rescues from outside, so I'm sure they have some intestinal things living in them.

I'm also looking for a good new wet food. Right now they only eat dry food, and that's not enough nutrition. I thought to make my own, but it's so much easier already don't for you, any suggestions? Thank you both so much for the input!

Hi Tee,

Thanks you for getting us an update. So happy to hear Max and Luna are ok.

Yes, Please do write a complaint  letter to the Humane Society. Each branch is a separate entity , but still must maintain quality care. They will get in touch with the Local HS with this report. Things will never change if we do not complain.

If you would like give me the Humane Society branch and I will write a letter too. It can only help!

Thank you .

Hello, thank you both for responding. It was the humane society, and they did all these tests, X-rays, had to give him fluid and anti nausea shot. Sent me home with metronidazole, and panacur, which was odd. They said it was gastrointestinal. I'm mad because they should have not charged me 56.00 for a follow up when this was a very healthy cat. He's eating, but only dry food. He won't touch the wet food. He was 8.7 pounds, the day I brought him back he lost a pound, and he feels lighter two days later. I think I'm going to write the humane society about the way they treat these animals. I saw the conditions of the ferrel release program, and it was horrible, spaying and neutering little baby kittens with 2 vaccines, deworming, etc , and releasing them again in the wild as Ferrell one-town days later. Made me sick.

At least my Max is eating and not throwing up. I am thankful for that. Luna is doing great too. Thank God. I had to say lots of prayers for my babies.

Thank you for both your feedback.

Hi I hope max is feeling better today! I really believe that the vomiting is caused by the rabies vaccine. Those have bad side effects. They've always affected my cats with nausea and lethargy.

Really, your vet should've known better to give ANY vaccine before surgery. That was a major assault to your kittens immune systems especially combined with the surgery!

Hi Tee,

ABSOLUTELY bring him to the vets ASAP. They will always make payment arrangements. In fact if related to surgery they should do it for free. Do not let them tell you it is not from surgery--let them prove it to you!!

You should not have to self medicate this little one. They will tell you what you need to do.

PLEASE get back to us after the vet visit. Vets do not turn animals away because some one has financial issues. If they do find another or go to an emergency Vet clinic.

Good Luck,
CML
