Not read link yet and Im already worried about...
Fortunately, my girls dont have any chip, I discarded the project of putting those when Lolo got pregnant and money shorter.
The fact of local Public Rescue Shelter having no Microchip scam made  me wonder it would be useless in case they got lost - clinics and so are the first placed you look for, with or without chip.
IF I had made a Healthy Plan for Lo, she would have one, it was part of the process.Never had money for :-) _ insurance  for 3 cats  are more expensive  than one to myself...

yes, you'd think there would be more warnings out abt these....at least from our Vets..

heres a study some of you might be interested in reading....done only on dogs and rodents ...but still would effect cats as well.

taking them out would mean another anesthesia for our kitties....but it would be a thought if they were going under for some procedure to remove it at that time....if you were concerned....all the humane societies put them in before adoption, guess we always need to weigh the pros and cons of everything we subject them too :(

So I read these articles and it seems that Merk was sued in 2010.

I have not read everything on this, but wouldn't you think major warnings would have come out about this 3 years ago. I wonder if removing the chip is an option

Such a shame. This was the "Holy Grail" for identification.
Seems the more we take care of our kits (chips, vaccinations, meds) the more harm can be done.

ZQ...Jade's chip is between her shoulder blades.  You can feel it easily.  But after reading it can MOVE, I checked again.  It's where it's supposed to be.  I'll see what my vet has to say next time we're there.

Like with Akira, FM, there hasn't been an obvious problems.  At least, I don't feel any lumps in the area.

Interesting.  I often wondered about that, since I can only imagine what it would be like if a human had a microchip implanted.  And, yes, a 12 gauge needle is rather large.  I didn't really have a choice in the matter, as Akira was a rescue cat from a shelter before her previous owner got her.  So, even her previous owner had no real choice in the matter.  Fortunately, she hasn't had any obvious problems with the microchip.  Now that I'm aware of this, I will be alert to any potential problems.

Dr. Becker talks about tattooing the information as a potential alternative.  But, I'm not altogether convinced that's such a good idea either, unless the pet is at high risk of running off.  Although, I realize that tattooing is done routinely on certain animals, like certified Seeing Eye Dogs and other service dogs and is routinely done on certain livestock to identify the animals instead of painful branding.  However, I have met up with people who have had severe allergic reactions to various tattoo inks, so why wouldn't this potential risk be true for some of our pets, too, since animals often have the same or similar health issues as people do?

I will check out that link.  I can't tell you how shocked and upset I was by the news of these microchips.  I am wondering if the major problem could be giving repeated vaccinations in the same spot as the microchip is the real reason behind these cancer cases.  Because, that would be like repeated assaults to the same area.  Where is Jade's microchip?  IF it's not in the same place where she's getting vaccines, she might be okay.  I would call Jade's vet and try to get details about this.  It might put your mind at ease and make you feel a whole lot better.  You don't need any more anxiety in your life.  If you can ease your mind, do it, hon.  If you call the vet, let me know what they say

And, girl, I would have no room to laugh at you about the internet because I've only had a computer since 2008!!!!  LOL

Hey ZQ, check out the article on the Mercola site by Dr Becker.  Talks about both the problems and risks of these chips.

http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2009/11/14/how-safe-are-pet-microchips.aspx

We had Jade chipped 7yrs ago...which was just prior to me discovering the Internet (do Not laugh! lol).  The info I know now...if I had it to do over, I wouldn't.

Wow, that is scary.  I never thought a microchip could cause cancer like that.  My mom's dog has one.  Now, I'm worried.  =(

Great, just great.  As you know, Jade has a chip.  Long before seeing this, it has occurred to me to feel around the area often.

Thank you for watching out for our babies.
