yup shes okay I will do that I am off to the vet early Dec to get it If I can pluck up courage I will take her and he will put it on, her fur is very dense and she hates it, its very difficult to do without her biting me .lol no what she does is struggles he'll do it he knows hopw..thanks for the input and help .....
Oh, I see what you meant about a reaction. You're referring to ZQ's information. All I can say is watch Tweety closely today, but it sounds like she's fine although sometimes, reactions don't show up for 24hrs.
Well that's okay, Margy, what's done is done. I don't usually see any reaction from Jade with the Frontline or previously, Advantage, so you may not see any reaction at all, however, I've heard here on the forum that the OTC med is very harsh, nor have I ever used it so not sure about reactions. I think if Tweety were going to react, she would have done so already.
I don't know if I understood you right, but the vet doesn't have to do it, you just buy it from them and do it yourself. Remember, mark yesterdays date on your calender so you can apply next month, same time. Good job, Margy! :)
PS the stuff came from petsmart
oh bother thank you for that info I only just saw it and had put it on her last night she seems fine today eating well, so if she was to get sick from the OTC one would it show up soon I didnt know I am going to google I will ask the vet to do it,from now on .
Margy, the more important thing right now is getting the flea treatment on...the product your vet sells (thanks, ZQ, I didn't know that about the OTC flea product.) like the Frontline. Tweety doesn't need an appt for that, it sounds like you understand how to apply it yourself and you can worry about the de-worming another time since Tweety doesn't like the carrier. The flea treatment is most important right now.
And thanks for the vote :)
I'm not sure what you said, but did you say that you were going to try the Hartz spot treatment? I would NEVER use those OTC flea products, shampoos only!! Those OTC flea products are very toxic and have caused deaths in pets. My vet has told me horror stories about these nasty products. Ask your vet about them, and see what they say. I honestly don't know how such a dangerous product stays on the market!
Thanks dear it clarifies much - I know vaseline. In fact I read something about using that in portuguese but sounded strange to me make the cat eats something its used as external "lubrifier"
Product we have here specialy for fur balls Ia called Malte Past not sure exactly is made of malt cos I passed by the zoopharma to ask but they were without at this moment
Sorry to hear of this ongoing furball problem, Apple. It makes sense it's Loreena since she's not only cleaning herself, but the girls as well. Jade is the same way about covering her "business"...is very methodical about it and it can go on quite a while :)
Plus, isn't it Spring going into Summer in Brazil? More shedding equals more furballs. You can only to your best with the brushing. Just to clarify, the petroleum jelly is for humans here and not specifically designed for cats. The product name is "Vaseline."
Ps I dont think the product we have here is the same petroleum jelly you have. Its a paste you put on the paw and the cats licks but I dont know what is it made from.
Have to search better.
Someone - or more than one - is having hairball problems here again :-(
This time I guess its Loreena,I brush everyone, she is the one I do better cos she accepts brushing but the damn one is perfectionist when it comes to hygenic habits and licks two daughters very, very carefully... ( she's also a little paranoic about covering pee/poo completely - even knowing I will remove it in a while :-) )
Just hope a number of balls found had been proporcional to the number of cats - one last thursday, one monday one tuesday - no one wednesday - one today.
They keep eating, so I'm not too much worried about.Paste for fur balls is 20 reais a tube and it wont last for long with daily use for 3 cats...
Hope the worms do not return after the second dosis ( will be day 5) is over
When I took her in for her shots last Feb they did give it to her then and they parted the fur on her neck,I think it was frontline, they did give her that and parted the fur to do it, last Feb bot wont the OTC hertz one do till she goes back for her yearly shots in Feb.I will take your advice anyway , its just I hate bunging her in a bag and going there I am a chicken ...
The flea treatment on the neck is easy! You'll get it, once you see the vet do it first.
BTW, to answer your question about the petroleum jelly, it helps cats get any hair they digest through their system better. This means less vomiting and less of a chance for the hair to block up their colon.
I was just thinking. If you haven't been putting any flea control on, chances are, Tweety has worms so you may want to take her in to be de-wormed and while you're there, they can apply the Frontline (or whatever you choose) and demonstrate for you.
I think you're doing great, Margy. Yes, you can do it yourself. Just buy the flea product at your vet (we choose Frontline since it kills the fleas AND the eggs) and put it between Tweety's shoulder blades or a little higher so she can't reach to lick it. You simply part the fur so the product is applied to her skin. The medicine works through the skin. Ask for a demonstration by a tech at your vet if you're unsure.
There is also Advantage (only kills the fleas, not the eggs) and Revolution.
Truly, Margy. For never having a cat, you're doing awesome! Tweety is a lucky girl.
So jade what would you suggest can I do it myself or is it best to take her to the vet to put it on her neck,I have to say I didnt realise she needed it each month she isnt good in the cat bag I got for her ,so shall I ask him to give me the stuff' and how I put it on her .? thank you I do appreciate your input being a cat ignoramous ......
...too quick on the send button. Yes, cats are Very clever and definitely understand you :)
Margy, our indoor/outdoor kitties need the flea product every single month, even in winter. Tweety is scratching and licking due to the fleas and the heat here in CA. The more she licks, the more fur she ingests. The second reason for the monthly flea control is just ONE flea ingested will cause worms.
.
Thanks guys , what does the petroleum jelly do,? hey she may not let me put it on but I am going to try, I have only been to the vet when I got her, and for her last shots, she is due back in Feb so I havent been putting the flea stuff on, I did think I should and got that OTC stuuff well she didnt like it, ignored me for 24 hours and scatched the area a lot.I have to admit I only saw it once so am hoping that was it, but she does lick a lot ... They are so clever I have found, they I swear this one understands me , lol I do talk to her a lot ..... ....
Hi, I agree w/ jade that it is normal to vomit furballs once in a while. You can always prevent these and make the hairballs easier to pass in Tweety's body by giving her some hairball rememdy that you can get in a pet store or you can always give petroleum jelly a few times a week.
All ya need to do is get a glob of it on your finger and rub it on her lips or put it IN her mouth. I used to put the glob on the paws, but realized the hard way that cats will shake their paws and ya wind up w/ petroleum jelly all over the place.
Yep, cat's ingest the fur when licking and preening. First let me ask you, does she seem to be over licking or just the usual. You put a flea product like Frontline, Advantage or Revolution? I don't have this problem with Jade much - I've only seen a couple of furballs in 4yrs so not alot of experience with this problem. I do know you can buy food 'specially made for this problem, but IMO, if Tweety only vomits a furball once in a while, that's normal...but maybe not, I'm not sure.
At least my answer will bring your post back up to the top :)
