chemo or no chemo

My male cat is going to be 19 years old soon. How much longer will chemo extend his life.  Should I put him through that.

I take it that your elder statesman has a cancer of some sort.

I'll apply the experience my dad had recently with chemo (he has stage 4 lung cancer).  He was fine for a few days and then the after effects knocked the "poo" out of him.

He opted for no more chemo after 2 treatments as he was getting all side effects and little to no benefit.  He did have radiation, which shrank the tumor, and is doing well on the palliative care.

He's terminal, most certainly, but is going gently into that long, good night.

We support the treatments that give him the most comfort.

Your kitty has had a good, long run.  Are you considering the treatment for his sake, or because you are hesitant to let go?

I've made that decision, a few times.  It is NEVER easy, especially for a friend of such long standing.

But, what's best for him?  What will give him the best life possible from now on?

take care - Pip

Hi Oldercat and Pip....just wanted to comment on your reply to Olders dilemma, one that we all face with pets or family at some point in our lives,...Pip you have a positive outlook on this painful decision and one I wholeheartedly agree with. there just comes a time with age or illness when enough is enough and we need to say goodbyes with love and compassion....bless you both!
