My cat has matted fur

I have an auburn turkish van cat. Her fur is very dense and she what I would call a semi-longhair. She is a beautiful cat. I groom her everyday. I do it to keep her fur nice and also because she enjoys it so much. It is our special bonding time. This is my problem. My cat is a good size cat. Not what I would call overweight. But, turkish van cats can be broad cats. Mine is broad in the butt area. Lol  But seriously, she has several real bad matted areas. Brushing her will not remove these matted areas. They feel very hard, so a brush is not going to go through it. My cat grooms herself. But never in the back region of her body. Hence the matted areas. I think she cannot reach this area, as she is rather broad back there. Any suggestions as how I can soften up these hard matted areas. She a beautiful cat as I said. But, the back end of her not so beautiful. Any suggestions would be very appreciated.

I agree. Cut off the mats, then just keep ahead of them as they grow back in by brushing every day.

I just wanted to let you know what i had to do with my dog. i have a chow and they as everyone knows are very hairy dogs, but i brush him everday and came across the same problem he had very hard matted fur on his belly. So what i ended up having to do was to cut off the matts and just brush before it happened again. it didnt look bad where i had cut but it was alot easier than trying to pull his hair out with my brush ya know. i would try just cutting the matts off then upkeep that area so you dont have to do it again. i hope this helps you.
