If your vet only did an external examination, he may not have found anything wrong, but she could have a neurological issue or sphincter muscle weakness. It is more common in female cats, particularly those that have had multiple litters or a litter at an early age.
I agree w/ Nancy, but would like to add that it could also be that your cat isn't happy w/ the litter. Do you clean it at least twice a day? Or, have you changed litter brands?
I strongly agree that a more thorough exam should be done, IF it hasn't already. If she were my cat, I'd ask for blood work-to check kidney, liver values and a thyroid test.
Good luck
I thought it was the litter in the beginning. She was an only child for 3 yrs. then I moved in with my partner and 2 male cats. The one male chases her and clawed her tail and she was very sensitive for a long time. I think he cornered her in the litter box area. We have 3 boxes back there. But, now they all live outside. Benefits of living in Hawaii where it's warm all year round. They are welcome to come and go as they please throughout the day but at night, OUTSIDE! So, she is doing her business outside. Then out of the blue one day she is sleeping on a cat bed we have on the porch. she gets up and turns around in the bed and cry/growls and starts to poop in the bed! I picked her up thinking it would stop her but she just let er rip! and it was HUGE! why would she poop where she sleeps??
This is not normal At All! A healthy cat would never do that. And the cry/growl - it sounds like kitty is in pain. Does kitty have a bm once a day on a regular basis? If not, this could be mega colon. I think maybe you should try another vet with zodiacqueen's suggestion of blood work.
Best of luck. It's very frustrating trying to figure out what our babies are trying to tell us.
I am now really worried about Jazz! She went misssing for 3 days. She will sometimes do this so I wasn't too concerned. But, when she showed up her "breakaway" collar was under one arm!
She was acting all crazy! Running from one corner of the closet to under the bed. ( which makes me think she is going to poop soon on the run like she does) I was able to cuddle w/her on the couch for a bit. Checked her out to see if she was hurt anywhere. She relaxed and purred for about 10 mins and then FREAKED out again! I noticed her back twitching quite a bit by her tail. Thinking maybe she has fleas and she could use a bath. I planned on taking her to the groomer over the weekend. She disappeared again and now it has been 4 days!
So, now I am thinking she went off to die somewhere and I should have gotten her to a vet for more tests! My roommate just kept telling me she is just a crazy cat, nothing wrong w/her...Crazy or not I miss my Jazzy : (
Do cats do that? Go off somewhere to die??
I'm afraid they do. If Jazz should come home, under no circumstances should she be let out until you can get her to the vet. I'm sorry this is happening, I know this is your kitty, but gee wiz, why do you post a question, have three different people tell you there's a problem, then ignore the advice? I truly hope Jazz shows up and it's not too late.
I wasn't ignoring the advice. I just have no money at the moment to get me to the doctor let alone my cat. I was monitoring and thought she was getting better. I do feel guilty and very very sad.... you are right Jade59 I suck and I will never forgive myself. I am hoping in my heart that she ran away and found a happier home w/no other cats. I miss her so much!
Oh man. No, you don't suck. I do wish, however, you would have mentioned money was an issue in the first place. There are options to help with that as you'll see at the top of the forum. I'm so sorry Jazz is gone and I know you're missing her. Do rethink another pet until your financial situation improves, though.
Take care, u4seen. I know you did your best.
We found Jazz!
She was in a neighbors garage and not moving much so they called the Humane Society. She is in pretty bad shape and will be in the hospital for 2-3 days. She has Liver failure and dehydration. She lost 8 lbs. The Vet said that she ate on her own and has a fair chance of pulling through.
I explained her previous symptoms and they said they will look into it as soon as they bring her back from the edge...
Thank You Jade59 for steering me to the top of the forum for financial options. I am checking into it.
Oh, poor Jazz!! I'm so glad you found her!
Please keep us updated on her progress and Good Luck!!!!!
Vet called (VCA has been AWESOME) looks like Jazz might be coming home 2morrow!
She is going to be the most spoiled kitty EVER! : D
Oh, wow, I know this really scared you. I only just now found this thread. I'm very glad the neighbors called the Humane Society and the right people contacted you. I know I would've been freaking out if I didn't know where my kitty was, too, especially if I knew the kitty might be sick like Jazz was. I'm also really glad that she is going to be going home tomorrow, because that is such a good sign that she is pulling through the dangerous dehydration.
Thanks Jade59 and FurballsMom!
Jazz spent her first night home. She is still unable to walk but only a few steps and is wobbly. But, she is eating a lot and drinking water. Also, she is using the litter box!
She is half the size she was and so frail it's hard to tell she's the same cat. Until she does her purr, meow talk. : )
Her blood tests came back normal other than the liver being damaged due to malnutrition. They didn't find any other issues such as Mega Colon that was a suggested problem.
They said if she doesn't get better in 2 wks that they will take x-rays at that time.
Jazz is going to be an indoor cat from now on!
update. Jazz is starting to feel better. She has been confined in my bedroom. Today I brought her out to the living room. She saw the other cat and started her old behavior. her back sarted twitching and not happy. making it apparent with a little growling. So put her back in bedroom and twitching stopped and she is purring.
I must also mention she has not pooped for almost a week. we have a follow up appt in a few days. Think that could be due to her organ failure from malnutrition? Just so frustrating not knowing what she is trying to tell me!
Oh, no, hasn't pooped for almost a week? This is very bad and Jazz needs to go to the vet tomorrow!! She will need an enema, most likely. I just reread your post before last and you say Jazz is eating alot so she is all backed up now. Really, hon, Jazz needs the vet ASAP and please tell them the concerns you posted of last Oct. I believe the original problem is showing itself.
