Ativan and Chiari malformation

I have been suffering in extreme headache  everyday since March 1 2011. Took Panadeine, and other paracetamol for pain but no relief. The severe pain on top of my head often attacks from 5:00  am to 9:00 am.  I also have neck pain and numbness in my right leg. I had CT scan and MRI and was diagnosed with Type  1 Chiari Malformation.
The Neurologist said I do not need any surgery. The constant pain has nothing to do with Chiari as the pain is caused by stress. I am now on Ativan medication as prescribed by the Neorologist.  Will it be good to seek for another check up from another Neurologist? Thanks.

I agree with Selma, you need further testing and an experienced Chiari NS.

A word of caution, Ativan (Lorazepam)  can cause psychological and physical dependence and is for short term use.

Hi and welcome to the Chiari forum.

For most with chiari u have a short period that u r experiencing HA's prior to getting ur dx...so u r lucky in that regard....and as far as the NL saying ur pain is not from ur chiari is a typical response we get all too often.

In fact we have dubbed it the royal chiari run around...since we run from Dr to Dr trying to get answers and they all claim we have chiari, but it has nothing to do with our pains.

Not all with chiari are surgical candidates, but u do need further testing to see if u have a CSF obstruction and over crowding.

It is good to have a good NL as we all need one, but once u have a dx u can go to a NS, but u want a true chiari specialist to help guide u.We do have a list of Drs- use the list to help u do research...the list is not meant as a referral....u need to find the dr that is right for u.
