DH is out of surgery

Mike is out of surgery.  Took 6 hours and NS said everything went pretty well.  He's pretty sick on his stomach.  We hope to get to see him soon.  I'm a very fidgety wife right now!

My daughter took this picture this morning in preop.  Made my heart melt when I saw it!

Oh really...I was in a semi private....so not like being in a ward...not sure they still have those, do they?..lol...

Oh my, does he have a hiatal hernia? If he has a sliding one the drugs and meds used for surgery may be affecting him....see about this and if it is a sliding hernia they may be able to manually manipulate it .....also some probiotics may be helpful, talk to his drs.

I hope u get answers on the hiccups.

Send our regards to Mike : )

Selma - the hospital we are at only has private rooms.  :0)

He finally came off oxygen last night.  He was able to maintain 95% sats after a good walk, so they were happy and yanked it.  He was quite thankful!

Pain control is the last thing keeping him here.  Today we are transitioning to oral meds.  They upped his Vicodin to 2 at a time, and he's now getting 2 Valium twice a day (he was taking 1 once at a day at home).  He's also still on the steroids.  But if we can manage to get all this switched to oral today, he will get to go home TOMORROW!

Blows my mind...  brain surgery on Wednesday and maybe home on Saturday!

The one question we do have - Mike has had hiccups ALL day today!  Only short little breaks of 15 minutes or less and no one can figure out why or how to stop them....  anyone else experience this awful thing post surgery!?!  As you can imagine...  it's NOT helping the pain!

Woo-Hoo!  Private room finally!  His face looks so much more relaxed now that he's in his own room and he's eating a good meal right now for the first time.   They've added morphine for pain control, but they are staying on top of it.  So far so good.

I got a good look at his incision - looks great!  And they ended up doing sutures instead of staples.  No redness, drainage, or anything.

Slowly losing tubes/wires too!  He still has an IV in his foot and one in his hand.  Also still on oxygen today, but it's down to 1.5 liters from 3 and they hope to keep weaning him to be off by tomorrow.  His goal is to be home Saturday....  the doctor says Sunday or Monday.  We shall see!

Hi,
Glad Mike is feeling a bit better now.
There are injectable meds that can be given to prevent sickness. In UK one type is called 'cyclizine'. It does annoy me slightly that morphine is prescribed without an anti-sickness drug too, as one of the main side-effects of morphine is sickness. I am a British registered nurse and if a doctor prescribed morphine for a patient, I would always get them to prescribe cyclizine too, whether it was needed or not. Better to have it available as soon as it's needed than running around trying to get a doc to prescribe it. Too much time wasting and not enough thought for the patient. Hope they sort this sickness out for him soon. x

The first time we saw him was a bit scary...  he was not good and I didn't expect what I saw.  He struggled for a while with labored breathing and keeping his 02 sats up.  When we got to go back the 2nd time at 8:30pm he was much better.  A bit more awake and was talking.  He even cracked a few jokes with me so I'd know that he was going to be ok.

Surgeon said that as soon as he finished "putting things where they belonged", he immediately saw that the CSF was beginning to flow better!  Praise God for that miracle.  They really anticipate a postive outcome and his symptoms improving after this is all said and done.  They have him on pain meds (obviously), Zofran (he's thrown up twice and had to have complete gown changes), and steroids to help with the inflammation in the brain.

Should be out of the ICU tomorrow, then he'll be there another 4-5 days.

I'm home now...  hoping to sleep before going back in the morning.
